The Arbëreshë rite of Barile on the day of Saint John the Baptist, with dolls, jumps, and prayers in Arbërishte.
Barile, in the heart of the Vulture region in the province of Potenza, is one of the Arbëreshë villages of Basilicata, a community of Albanian origin that has preserved its own language, rites, and traditions for centuries. Among these, the Baptism of the Dolls (in Arbërishte Puplet e Shenjanjet) stands out, a secular rite documented since 1730 and linked to June 24th, the day of the celebrations in honor of Saint John the Baptist.
The absolute protagonists are the village girls, who wear the traditional Arbëreshë costume and line up in pairs in the station square, Piazza Angelo Bozza. Each places her doll on the ground "as if it were a real newborn" and jumps three times reciting a secular prayer in the Arbërishte dialect: it is a gesture of passage and community that symbolically seals the baptism.
The dolls are specially made for the occasion: the head is made of rags, the face is painted, and the body is made from an iron ladle wrapped in bandages, dressed in small dresses and diapers. A simple, domestic artifact that encapsulates an entire cultural memory.
The rite concludes with the distribution of many biscuits for all participants, in a festive atmosphere that involves the entire community of Barile. In recent years, the tradition has also gained national television coverage, helping to make known one of the most authentic and poetic aspects of the Lucanian Arbëreshë heritage.
In 2026, Barile renews the Arbëreshë rite of the Baptism of the Dolls on June 24th, the day of the celebrations for Saint John the Baptist. The ceremony takes place in the station square (Piazza Angelo Bozza), with the village girls as protagonists of the rite passed down since 1730.
The rite is concentrated on June 24th. Traditional program: girls in Arbëreshë costume line up in pairs in Piazza Angelo Bozza; each places her doll on the ground and jumps three times reciting the secular prayer in the Arbërishte dialect; followed by tastings, games, and dances; the rite concludes with the distribution of biscuits to all participants. Detailed times will be communicated by the Municipality of Barile in the preceding weeks.
