San Lorenzo, patron saint of Romagnese

Romagnese, in the Province of Pavia (Lombardy), is a village in the upper Oltrepò Pavese whose patron saint is San Lorenzo. The martyr, who died in the summer of 258 during the persecution ordered by Emperor Valerian, is celebrated every year on August 10th, a date that tradition inextricably links to the night of the shooting stars.

The festival on the night of the Perseids

The coincidence between the patronal festival and the famous night of San Lorenzo makes this event particularly evocative. While the sky of the Oltrepò offers the spectacle of the Perseids, the town square of Romagnese comes alive for the festival: it is here that the community gathers every year to celebrate its saint amidst faith and conviviality.

The heart of the evening is the dinner organised by the Pro Loco in the square, followed by a dancing evening enlivened by renowned folk music orchestras, according to the tradition of 'liscio' (folk dancing) that endures in the villages of the Oltrepò. The festival thus combines the religious dimension with the popular one, in a cheerful atmosphere that involves all generations.

The Festa di San Lorenzo attracts not only the residents of Romagnese but also the many holidaymakers and visitors who choose the upper Oltrepò Pavese in the summer.
