The festival of Carcare's patron saint, featuring a fireworks display on the Bormida river and Val Bormida tradition
June 24th is a date marked in red on the calendar of Carcare, a center in the Val Bormida in the province of Savona: it is the day of San Giovanni Battista (Saint John the Baptist), the town's patron saint. The patronal festival has always been one of the unmissable events of the Val Bormida summer, uniting the religious and popular dimensions and involving the entire community.
The most anticipated moment is the fireworks display that lights up the banks of the Bormida river. In recent years, the Municipality has commissioned specialized companies to create true pyromusical shows, with fireworks synchronized to music, capable of attracting crowds from all over the valley. The traditional funfair is held in Piazza Caravadossi, while along the riverbanks, the custom of the St. John's bonfires is renewed, an ancient ritual of the solstice night.
Alongside the spectacular moments, the day retains its devotional heart with celebrations in honor of the saint. The San Giovanni festival in Carcare is an opportunity to come together, rediscover the traditions of the Val Bormida, and experience the town center in a festive atmosphere that marks the full start of summer.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Municipality of Carcare in the weeks preceding the festival. The traditional schedule includes:
