The patron saint's festival in the mountain village of Val Cavargna
Saint John the Baptist is the patron saint of Cusino, a municipality of a few souls overlooking the Val Cavargna, one of the most picturesque and authentic valleys in the Como area, on the border with Switzerland. His feast day, set for June 24th, is the main religious and community event of the year.
On the Sunday closest to June 24th, the solemn mass is celebrated in the parish church dedicated to the saint. A tradition particularly dear to the community is that during the service, the wedding anniversaries of the town's couples are also celebrated: an gesture that links the religious dimension to the family and emotional one, typical of small mountain communities.
After the service, the festival moves to the square in front of the church, where stalls are set up and a lunch is organized for the population. It is an opportunity to gather around the typical dishes of Val Cavargna, in a spirit of sharing that also brings back those who have emigrated elsewhere.
Cusino is part of Val Cavargna, a pre-Alpine valley of Lake Como known for its mountain traditions, its pastures, and the culture of the magnani (itinerant pot menders). Patronal festivals like that of Saint John the Baptist are a precious piece of this identity, to be discovered by those seeking the most authentic and least touristy Italy.
In 2026, Cusino will celebrate its patron saint Saint John the Baptist around June 24th, following tradition. The program adheres to the community's customs: the solemn mass in the parish church, celebrating the wedding anniversaries of the town's couples, followed by the communal lunch in the square in front, with stalls and specialties from Val Cavargna.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the parish closer to the festival. The traditional structure includes:
Cusino can be reached from the western shore of Lake Como by ascending the Val Cavargna. By car, take the road that goes up from Porlezza or San Bartolomeo Val Cavargna towards the valley's villages. The village is small: the heart of the festival is the parish church and the square in front of it.
The festival is celebrated around June 24th, on the Sunday closest to the date. For the detailed program of the year, it is advisable to check with the parish or the Val Cavargna portal.
