The patron saint of Guardialfiera, the architect of the Colosseum, and the opening of the Holy Door
Guardialfiera, a village in the province of Campobasso (Molise) overlooking the lake and homeland of the writer Francesco Jovine, celebrates its patron saint, San Gaudenzio Martire, on June 1st and 2nd. Tradition holds that he was a young architect commissioned during the reign of Emperor Vespasian to design the Flavian Amphitheatre โ the future Colosseum. During the construction, he is said to have converted to Christianity thanks to the testimony of the workers, suffering martyrdom: thrown to the beasts alive, his remains were secretly collected by Christians and deposited in the Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome.
On April 7, 1751, the saint's relics arrived in Guardialfiera, carried on the shoulders of the Capuchin friars. Since then, the remains have been kept and venerated in the parish church, which has elected San Gaudenzio as its patron.
The most solemn moment of the festival is the opening of the Holy Door, one of the very few existing outside Rome, which is opened only once a year precisely for San Gaudenzio (except in Jubilee Years, when the Roman ones are opened). On the morning of June 1st, the faithful process to the co-cathedral; upon reaching the Holy Door, after the celebrations, the Bishop knocks three times with the cross, the door opens, he kneels, kisses the jamb, and enters. At the end of the Eucharistic celebration, the urn with the saint's bones is carried in procession. On the afternoon of June 2nd, the rite of closing the Door takes place.
The festival of San Gaudenzio combines a fascinating legend, a rare rite like that of the Holy Door, and the charm of a Molise village suspended between the lake and the literary memory of Francesco Jovine. Guardialfiera is also among the candidates for Borgo dei Borghi 2026.
