About Presepe Vivente

Between Christmas and Epiphany, the sandstone caves dug into the rock of Montenero di Bisaccia host one of the oldest and most evocative living nativity scenes in Molise. Since 1984, a path through ancient crafts, reconstructions of rural life, markets, and workshops leads to the nativity scene set up in a large cave. A journey through time curated by Pro Loco Frentana that attracts visitors from all over the region.

The nativity scene in the caves

The Presepe Vivente di Montenero di Bisaccia is one of the most important and long-standing nativity representations in Molise. It takes place in the suggestive sandstone caves dug into the rock on which part of the town stands, in the province of Campobasso: a unique natural setting that makes the event truly spectacular.

A tradition since 1984

Born in 1984 and organized by the Pro Loco Frentana, the nativity scene offers a long path through alleys and caves where visitors encounter ancient artisan workshops, reconstructions of past rural homes and scenes, traditional markets, and crafts. The journey culminates with the nativity scene, set up in a large cave.

Among the caves and badlands

Included in the municipal Christmas calendar 'Buon Natale Insieme', the nativity scene is one of the most beloved events of the Montenero winter, capable of uniting faith, tradition, and identity in the heart of Basso Molise.
