The patron saint of the village of the Pentro horse, on the Alto Volturno
Montenero Val Cocchiara is a small village in Alto Molise, in the province of Isernia, famous for being the home of the Pentro horse, the native equine breed that lives wild in the Pantano area. Its patron saint is San Clemente Martire, celebrated on the second Sunday of August.
The patronal celebrations include a solemn mass, a procession with the statue of the Saint through the streets of the historic center, and an evening of music in the piazza. The August date is not coincidental: it coincides with the period when many emigrants return to the village for their holidays, making the patronal festival a great gathering moment for the entire community of Montenero Val Cocchiara.
The 2026 edition of the festival of San Clemente Martire in Montenero Val Cocchiara falls on Sunday, August 9, the second Sunday of the month. The religious program includes a solemn mass and the procession with the statue of the patron saint through the village streets, while the evening comes alive with music in the piazza. The occasion coincides with the summer return of emigrants, who come back to the village of the Pentro horse to reconnect with the community.
The detailed civil program will be released by the Municipality and the festival committee in the weeks preceding the event.
