The Festa patronale di Maria SS. Assunta (Patronal Festival of Mary SS. Assumed) is celebrated every year on August 15th in Candide, the main village of Comelico Superiore, in the province of Belluno. The Assumption is the patron saint of the parish of Candide and the entire municipality, and the Ferragosto solemnity represents the core of religious and community life in the upper Val Comelico.
The parish church
The heart of the festival is the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the oldest and most significant parish churches in Comelico, housing a rich artistic heritage. Around it, the liturgical celebrations and the solemn procession through Piazza Zambelli, in the centre of Candide, take place.
A community tradition
The festival of the Assumption unites the inhabitants of the villages of Comelico Superiore (Candide, Casamazzagno, Dosoledo, Padola) in a day of devotion and gathering, coinciding with the period of highest summer tourist presence in the Dolomite valley. It is an event that intertwines Ladin identity, religious tradition, and hospitality, in the heart of the Belluno Dolomites.
