The patronal festival of Ficulle, between a procession of light and the Palio dei Rioni
The Festa di Sant'Eumenio is the patronal festival of Ficulle, a village in the Orvietano area of the Province of Terni. The patron saint's day is September 18th, but the celebrations extend over several days. Legend has it that during an ancient siege, hundreds of mysterious torches appeared moving on the village walls, putting the enemies to flight: the community recognized Sant'Eumenio, a bishop known as a thaumaturge, as the author of the miracle.
The program combines religious moments and popular entertainment. The heart of the festival is the solemn mass followed by the procession and the parade of light, with archers, flag-wavers, and drummers, and the torchlight procession that crosses the historic center in memory of the miracle of the torches. There is also the launch of hot air balloons, the characteristic parade of the «Morti Secche», concerts, popular games, folklore shows, and taverns with typical dishes.
Among the most beloved events are the Staffetta di Sant'Eumenio, a historic night foot race that has reached its thirtieth edition in recent years, and the Palio dei Rioni, the challenge between the districts of Ficulle introduced in 2018. The festival concludes with dancing, tombola (a lottery game), and the late summer atmosphere, in one of the most defining events of the Ficulle calendar.
The 2026 edition of the Festa di Sant'Eumenio is confirmed as the patronal festival of Ficulle, in the Province of Terni, with the patron saint's day set for September 18th and celebrations spread over the preceding days.
