About Perugia 1416

For an entire weekend, the historic center of Perugia returns to the 15th century with Perugia 1416, the re-enactment celebrating the triumphant entry of the condottiero Braccio Fortebracci into his city after the battle of Sant'Egidio. The five historic districts โ€” Porta Eburnea, Porta San Pietro, Porta Sant'Angelo, Porta Santa Susanna, and Porta Sole โ€” compete in the Palio through skill tests, costumed pageants, flag-wavers, medieval taverns, and evening shows in the squares and streets of the Umbrian capital.

Perugia Returns to 1416

Perugia 1416 is the grand historical re-enactment that brings the center of Perugia back to the Renaissance era, celebrating the entry of the condottiero Braccio Fortebracci into the city after the victorious battle of Sant'Egidio. The event involves the entire historic center of the Umbrian capital, transformed into a period market with decorations, craft demonstrations, and taverns.

The Five Districts and the Palio

The absolute protagonists are the five districts into which the medieval city was divided: Porta Eburnea, Porta San Pietro, Porta Sant'Angelo, Porta Santa Susanna, and Porta Sole. The districts compete for the Palio through three main challenges: archery, the tower race, and the banner race. The competition, accompanied by costumed pageants, flag-wavers, and theatrical performances, determines the winning district each year.

Market, Taverns, and Atmosphere

Along the streets of the center, there is a craft market, demonstrations of historical weapons, and reconstructions of 15th-century daily life. The district taverns, such as Taverna Eburnea, offer traditional Umbrian dishes and medieval recipes. The nocturnal historical pageant with Braccio's entry and the handing over of the keys is one of the most evocative moments of the event.

Perugia 1416 โ€” edition 2026

The 11th edition of Perugia 1416 takes place from June 5 to 7, 2026, in the historic center. Three days of Palio among the five districts with archery, tower race, and banner race, as well as historical pageants, period market, taverns, and shows, preceded by introductory events starting May 23.

The 2026 edition of Perugia 1416 takes place from June 5 to 7 in the historic center of Perugia. The five districts โ€” Porta Eburnea, Porta San Pietro, Porta Sant'Angelo, Porta Santa Susanna, and Porta Sole โ€” compete in the Palio through three challenges: archery, tower race, and banner race.

Introductory events are added to the weekend's activities: a conference on medieval and Renaissance cuisine on May 23 and the presentation of the artist's Palio banner at the Logge di Braccio on May 30. The district taverns open as early as June 3.
