The grand historical reenactment of Braccio Fortebracci's entry
Perugia 1416 is the grand historical reenactment that brings the center of Perugia back to the Renaissance era, celebrating the entry of the condottiero Braccio Fortebracci into the city after the victorious battle of Sant'Egidio. The event involves the entire historic center of the Umbrian capital, transformed into a period market with decorations, craft demonstrations, and taverns.
The absolute protagonists are the five Districts into which the medieval city was divided: Porta Eburnea, Porta San Pietro, Porta Sant'Angelo, Porta Santa Susanna, and Porta Sole. The Districts compete for the Palio through three main tests: archery, tower pull, and banner race. The competition, accompanied by costume parades, flag wavers, and theatrical performances, determines the winning District each year.
Along the streets of the center, there is an artisan market, demonstrations of historical weapons, and reconstructions of 15th-century daily life. The district taverns, like the Taverna Eburnea, offer traditional Umbrian dishes and medieval recipes. The nocturnal historical parade with Braccio's entry and the handing over of the keys is one of the most evocative moments of the event.
The 2026 edition of Perugia 1416 takes place from June 5 to 7 in the historic center of Perugia. The five Districts โ Porta Eburnea, Porta San Pietro, Porta Sant'Angelo, Porta Santa Susanna, and Porta Sole โ compete in the Palio through three tests: archery, tower pull, and banner race.
Preparatory events are added to the weekend's events: a conference on medieval and Renaissance cuisine on May 23 and the presentation of the artist's Palio at the Logge di Braccio on May 30. The taverns open as early as June 3.
