Rapone celebrates its patron saint in mid-June
San Vito Martire is the patron saint of Rapone, a small village in the province of Potenza in the Vulture-Melfese area. His festival, which falls on June 15th, is one of the most keenly felt events in the local calendar, a recurrence that unites the community in devotion to the healing saint, venerated since ancient times and also linked to the lands of Lucania.
According to tradition, San Vito was born in Sicily in the 3rd century and suffered martyrdom under Emperor Diocletian. Invoked as a great thaumaturge and protector against epilepsy — hence the popular expression "San Vito's dance" — the cult of the saint is particularly rooted in the Vulture-Melfese, where he is the patron of both Rapone and nearby Atella. In Rapone, the devotion is renewed every year with the same intensity, passed down from generation to generation.
The festival follows the traditional pattern of Lucanian patron saint festivals: liturgical celebrations in honour of the saint, the solemn procession with the statue of San Vito through the village streets, and moments of popular celebration that liven up the town. It is the occasion when Rapone comes together, also welcoming emigrants and visitors returning for the summer.
Promoted by the Parish together with the Municipality of Rapone, the festival is also an opportunity to discover this village with its unique identity, famous for the "Rapone Paese delle Fiabe" (Rapone, Village of Fairy Tales) project and its gastronomic traditions. An authentic corner of inner Basilicata, where popular faith remains a precious bond.
The 2026 edition of the Festa di San Vito Martire in Rapone takes place on June 15th, in the sign of devotion to the patron saint of the Vulture village.
