Lurano celebrates San Lino, the first Italian Pope and successor of Peter
The Festa di San Lino is the most important patronal event in Lurano, a town in the Bassa Bergamasca region of the province of Bergamo. The town is dedicated to Saint Linus Pope and Martyr, a figure of exceptional importance: the second bishop of Rome, direct successor of Saint Peter, and considered the first Italian Pope, in office around 67-76 AD, during Nero's persecutions.
Lurano's connection with its patron saint is ancient. A church dedicated to Saint Linus already existed in the 16th century, consecrated in 1542; the current parish church was built between 1959 and 1964 and consecrated under the title of Saint Linus Pope. Devotion to the saint has thus accompanied the community for centuries, becoming deeply rooted in the town's identity.
The most solemn moment of the week of celebrations is the procession, which traditionally takes place in the evening, starting from the parish church and winding through the town's streets. Around this religious moment, community celebrations and events unfold, animating Lurano during the festival period.
The Festa di San Lino is part of the rich tradition of patronal festivals in the Bassa Bergamasca, where each town celebrates its patron saint with rites, processions, and community gatherings. For Lurano, it is the annual opportunity to renew the bond with a unique figure in the history of the Church and with its own roots, in the province of Bergamo.
In 2026, Lurano will also celebrate its patron saint Saint Linus Pope and Martyr, whose feast day is around September 23rd. The parish of Saint Linus will offer religious celebrations during the festival week, including the traditional evening procession that starts from the parish church and winds through the town's streets. Alongside the liturgical moments, community initiatives will take place. The detailed program of the festivities will be communicated by the parish closer to the date, renewing the Bassa Bergamasca's bond with this extraordinary figure from the early Church.
