The historical reenactment of the village of Bartolomeo Colleoni at the Rocca Viscontea
Romano di Lombardia, in the Province of Bergamo (Lombardy), is deeply linked to the figure of Bartolomeo Colleoni, a famous condottiero of the 15th century. In September, the town celebrates this past with Romano Medievale, a historical reenactment that transforms the center and the Rocca Viscontea into a grand living fresco of the Middle Ages. For the occasion, the ancient fortress reopens to the public, offering guided tours inside.
The program is very rich. Soldiers and archers come alive in the encampments, while the village is populated by stalls of ancient crafts, a games area, and a corner dedicated to falconry. There are also flag wavers, musicians, and a market of artisanal products, all contributing to the atmosphere of a medieval village celebrating.
Among the most anticipated moments is the historical parade, which winds through the town's streets with Captain Bartolomeo Colleoni, ladies, and knights. This is followed by the Palio dei Quartieri, a competition featuring children representing the historic districts of Romano, and evening theatrical performances, such as those by the company Quelli dei Cappuccini dedicated to Colleoni as a condottiero, husband, and father.
Organized by the Municipality of Romano di Lombardia, Romano Medievale is more than just a costume festival; it's an opportunity to rediscover the history of the Bergamo area and to experience the Rocca Viscontea in an extraordinary setting. With free admission to most activities, the event attracts history enthusiasts, families, and curious visitors from all over the province of Bergamo.
The 2026 edition of Romano Medievale takes place from September 19 to 21 around the Rocca Viscontea and in the historic center of Romano di Lombardia. For the occasion, the ancient fortress reopens to the public with guided tours, while the village is filled with encampments, ancient crafts, falconry, flag wavers, and musicians.
The heart of the reenactment is the historical parade with Captain Bartolomeo Colleoni, followed by the Palio dei Quartieri and theatrical performances.
