The patron saint on the hill

San Giusto is the martyr who gives his name to the hill most cherished by the people of Trieste, the one on which the majestic Cathedral of San Giusto and the Castle stand, dominating the city and the gulf. His feast day, set for November 3rd, is the most deeply felt civil and religious solemnity in Trieste: although the Roman Martyrology commemorates the saint on November 2nd, the celebration is moved to the following day to avoid overlapping with the Commemoration of the Dead.

The pontifical mass in the Cathedral

The central moment of the day is the solemn pontifical mass celebrated in the morning in the Cathedral of San Giusto, presided over by the Bishop of Trieste, in the presence of the City's Gonfalon and civil and military authorities. The basilica, with its famous Byzantine mosaics and its facade marked by the large Gothic rose window, welcomes the faithful and citizens in an atmosphere of deep reflection.

City festival and remembrance of the Redemption

November 3rd in Trieste is also the anniversary of the city's Redemption to Italy, which occurred in 1918 at the end of World War I. For this reason, the day combines the religious and civil dimensions: the celebrations in the Cathedral are accompanied by commemorative ceremonies, the arrival of the Tricolore (Italian flag), and honors to the Fallen at the city's symbolic sites, from the Scala Reale to the Fountain of the Four Continents.

A day of identity

Promoted jointly by the Municipality of Trieste and the Diocese, the Feast of San Giusto is much more than a liturgical observance: it is the day when Trieste recognizes itself in its roots, amidst faith, history, and love for the city. Ascending San Giusto hill on this day means grasping the most authentic soul of the Julian capital.
