San Nicola di Bari is the main patron saint of Vastogirardi, a charming medieval village in Alto Molise, in the province of Isernia, nestled in the woods of the MAB Unesco Reserve. The festival in his honour is the moment of greatest devotion for the town and is celebrated in the first days of July.
The triduum and the procession
The celebrations are structured around a triduum (July 1-2-3), with the main festival on July 3rd. The statue of the saint, housed in the fifteenth-century church dedicated to him in the heart of the village, is carried in a solemn procession through the streets of the town, accompanied by the community.
A festival that attracts emigrants
The festival of San Nicola is also a great moment for reunion: many returning emigrants choose these days to come back to Vastogirardi and relive the rites that connect the present to the roots of the Molise village together with the community. The celebrations intertwine with the nearby Festa della Madonna delle Grazie and the Volo dell'Angelo.

The Festa del Santo Patrono San Nicola di Bari 2026 culminated on July 3rd, the third day of the triduum of celebrations. The statue of the saint, housed in the fifteenth-century church of the village, was carried in a solemn procession through the streets of Vastogirardi.

Vastogirardi is located in Alto Molise, in the province of Isernia, within the MAB Reserve of Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo. It can be reached by car from Isernia and from the Agnone area.
