The patrons of San Pietro Avellana, between faith and a thousand years of history
Known primarily for its truffles, San Pietro Avellana (province of Isernia) celebrates its patron saints, Peter and Paul, on June 29th according to Catholic tradition. The inhabitants, the 'sanpietresi', gather around the figures of the two apostles for a solemn Mass and a procession through the village streets, an event that ideally opens the summer season for this Molise village.
The village's connection to Saint Peter dates back to the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro dell'Avellana, founded in the Middle Ages and which became a dependency of Montecassino in the 11th century. This millennial history gives the patronal festival a strong identity value: celebrating Saints Peter and Paul means renewing the bond that links the community to its origins, in a territory of the upper Molise rich in nature and traditions.
Despite its intimate nature, the festival is a moment of strong cohesion for the 'sanpietresi' and for those who return to the village during the summer. The religious celebrations are accompanied by the convivial moments typical of the patronal festivals in small Apennine villages, featuring music, illuminations, and community gatherings.
The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul returns on June 29, 2026, to San Pietro Avellana (IS). As tradition dictates, the day dedicated to the two apostles will be marked by a solemn Mass and a procession with the effigies of the patrons through the village streets, accompanied by the usual festive moments of the San Pietro community. The religious and civil program is typically announced by the parish and the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the anniversary.
The detailed program will be released by the parish and the Municipality of San Pietro Avellana.
