Grottammare's Patron Saint Festival

The Festa del Patrono San Paterniano is the most cherished event of the summer in Grottammare, a pearl of the Riviera delle Palme in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region. Every year, in the days around July 10th, the Municipality of Grottammare and the town's parishes bring the historic center, the promenade, and the Foce del Tesino to life with a program that combines the religious dimension with popular and festive elements, attracting residents and tourists from the Piceno coast.

San Paterniano and Local Tradition

San Paterniano, born in Fano in the 3rd century, has been venerated in Grottammare since time immemorial, and his festival is rooted in centuries of community history. The celebration preserves a curious and much-loved element: the launch of firecrackers and daytime fireworks which, according to peasant tradition, were believed to have the power to "break the clouds" and ward off the devastating summer hailstorms that threatened local crops. A belief that, year after year, accompanies the opening of the festivities at the Foce del Tesino.

The Festival Program

While the details change with each edition, the festival follows a well-established pattern:

• Religious Celebrations: the solemn Holy Mass and the procession with the statue of the saint through the town's streets.
• Concerts and Shows: musical evenings in Piazza Kursaal, choral concerts, and tribute bands.
• Artisan Market and street food stands that liven up the town center.
• Palio del Pattino: the historic rowing race on the sea, which in 2026 will reach its XXVI edition, with the presentation of the boats and the challenge between districts.
• Photography Exhibition dedicated to local history and faith.
• The grand pyromusical show at midnight, with fireworks reflecting on the sea to close the festivities.
