Grottammare's patron saint festival between faith, tradition, and fireworks over the sea
The Festa del Patrono San Paterniano is the most cherished event of the summer in Grottammare, a pearl of the Riviera delle Palme in the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region. Every year, in the days around July 10th, the Municipality of Grottammare and the town's parishes bring the historic center, the promenade, and the Foce del Tesino to life with a program that combines the religious dimension with popular and festive elements, attracting residents and tourists from the Piceno coast.
San Paterniano, born in Fano in the 3rd century, has been venerated in Grottammare since time immemorial, and his festival is rooted in centuries of community history. The celebration preserves a curious and much-loved element: the launch of firecrackers and daytime fireworks which, according to peasant tradition, were believed to have the power to "break the clouds" and ward off the devastating summer hailstorms that threatened local crops. A belief that, year after year, accompanies the opening of the festivities at the Foce del Tesino.
While the details change with each edition, the festival follows a well-established pattern:
The Festa di San Paterniano is part of Grottammare's rich summer calendar, which from June to September offers over four months of events combining culture, music, and traditions. Experiencing the patron saint's festival means discovering the authentic identity of a seaside village in the Marche region, where popular devotion blends with tourist hospitality and the beauty of the promenade, which has been awarded the Blue Flag.
The Festa del Patrono San Paterniano 2026 returns to Grottammare from July 10th to 12th, 2026, as part of the summer program dedicated to culture, music, and traditions by the Municipality. The dates are official, while the complete program is being finalized.
Among the confirmed elements: the launch of firecrackers at the Foce del Tesino to "break the clouds," the artisan market with street food stalls, the photography exhibition on local history and faith, and especially the XXVI edition of the Palio del Pattino, the rowing challenge featuring the town's districts. To close the festivities, as tradition dictates, a pyromusical show on the sea.
For the schedules of processions, concerts, and races, please refer to the official program published by the Municipality of Grottammare.
Program to be defined. Traditional events expected: religious celebrations and procession, launch of firecrackers at Foce del Tesino, artisan market, street food, photography exhibition, concerts in Piazza Kursaal, and XXVI Palio del Pattino. The pyromusical show concludes the festival.
