The patronal festival of Aquileia, July 12th in the Patriarchal Basilica
Hermagoras, the first bishop of Aquileia, and his deacon Fortunatus are the patron saints of the city and protectors of the entire Friuli region. Living in the 3rd century, during a time of persecution, they are venerated as the first martyrs of the Aquileian Church, whose Christian tradition is among the oldest and most influential in Italy. Every year, on July 12th, Aquileia celebrates them with its patronal festival.
The heart of the festival is the Patriarchal Basilica of Aquileia, dedicated to the two saints by Patriarch Poppo in 1031 and guardian of their relics. Here, the solemn liturgical celebration takes place, accompanied by chants, and the procession of the relics of the saints, a moment of deep devotion that draws faithful and pilgrims from all over Friuli.
The festival of SS. Hermagoras and Fortunatus is not only a religious event but also an opportunity to rediscover the exceptional historical and spiritual heritage of Aquileia, a site recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Amidst the early Christian mosaics of the Basilica and the charm of the ancient city, July 12th becomes the day when the community gathers around its roots of faith.
On July 12, 2026, Aquileia will celebrate its patrons, Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus. The commemoration, fixed for centuries on this date, culminates in the Patriarchal Basilica with the solemn liturgical celebration and the procession of the relics of the two martyrs, in an event of faith that involves the community of Aquileia and numerous faithful from Friuli.
The detailed religious program for the 2026 edition will be communicated by the parish and the Patriarchal Basilica in the preceding days. The traditional structure includes:
