The Festa da carnescé is the carnival celebration that enlivens the municipality of Badia (Abtei) every year, in Val Badia, in the autonomous province of Bolzano, in Trentino-Alto Adige. The event's name recalls the Ladin word carnescé (in some local variants carlascé), which refers to the carnival period in the Ladin valleys. It is an event designed primarily for families with children, taking place in the afternoon at the foot of the ski slopes in a simple and joyful atmosphere.

Where it takes place

The meeting point is at the valley station of the La Crusc 1 gondola lift, along Str. La Müda in Badia, at the foot of the Sasso della Croce (Sas dla Crusc). Its location, nestled in the winter landscape of Alta Badia and the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, makes the party a perfect opportunity to combine carnival fun with a day in the snow.

What to expect

• Colorful masks and costumes: adults and children are invited to come dressed up in their best outfits.
• Animation and entertainment for children, with games and festive moments.
• Face painting to transform little ones into fantastic characters.
• Traditional carnival pastries (krapfen and crostoli), prepared according to Ladin tradition.

A Ladin tradition

The Festa da carnescé is part of the rich Ladin carnival tradition, which in the Dolomite valleys symbolically marks the end of winter and the return to community life after the coldest months. In the past, carnival was the time when young people would dress up to celebrate and gather; today, the Badia party preserves this cheerful and collective spirit, presented in a light-hearted form suitable for all ages.

Organization

The event is organized by the Alta Badia Tourist Cooperative Society, based in Corvara, which manages the hospitality and the calendar of events in Alta Badia. Participation in the party is free and open to all.
