About Ferrara Buskers Festival

For five days at the end of August, the historic center of Ferrara transforms into the largest open-air stage dedicated to street arts. Musicians, jugglers, acrobats, and artists from all over the world animate squares and alleys with over 60 shows every evening, playing only for the audience's donations in their hats. Born in 1988, the Ferrara Buskers Festival is the oldest and most famous busking event worldwide, an unmissable appointment for music, wonder, and Renaissance atmosphere.

The number one busking festival in the world

The Ferrara Buskers Festival is the most important international event dedicated to the street musician (the busker) and, after almost forty years of history, it remains unique on the world stage. Every year, at the end of August, the historic center of Ferrara โ€” a UNESCO World Heritage site in the heart of Emilia-Romagna โ€” fills with music, juggling, acrobatics, and poetry: streets, squares, and courtyards become an immense, widespread stage where artists perform without a fee, collecting only spontaneous donations from the public in their proverbial hat.

A tradition born in 1988

The festival was born in 1988 from the intuition of Stefano Bottoni, a blacksmith from Ferrara with a passion for music, who proposed the idea to the municipal administration. Since then, the festival has grown to become an international phenomenon, capable of attracting hundreds of artists and tens of thousands of spectators from all over Italy and abroad to Ferrara. Historically, the event hosted a guest nation (and later a city) each edition, from New York to Dublin to Copenhagen, always maintaining a strong focus on dialogue between different cultures.

What to expect

The festival goes far beyond impromptu concerts on street corners. The program includes:

  • Over 60 shows every evening spread across various locations in the historic center, with performances repeating in a continuous cycle;
  • Talks, readings, and meetings dedicated to busking culture and social and environmental issues;
  • Workshops for adults and children on music and the environment;
  • Exhibitions and collateral events throughout the city;
  • a quality street food area with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, and the Artisan Craft Market along the route;
  • the Dopofestival (After-Festival), free admission performances that continue after midnight.

Ferrara, ideal city of the Renaissance

The setting also makes the event unique: Ferrara, the capital of the province of the same name in Emilia-Romagna, is one of Italy's most fascinating art cities, famous for the Este Castle, its walls, and the Renaissance urban planning of the Herculean Addition. Strolling through its illuminated squares in the evening, stopping from one performance area to another to listen to a string quartet, applaud an acrobat, or be surprised by a juggler, is an experience that uniquely blends great popular music and historical heritage.
