The world's largest international street musician showcase
The Ferrara Buskers Festival is the most important international event dedicated to the street musician (the busker) and, after almost forty years of history, it remains unique on the world stage. Every year, at the end of August, the historic center of Ferrara โ a UNESCO World Heritage site in the heart of Emilia-Romagna โ fills with music, juggling, acrobatics, and poetry: streets, squares, and courtyards become an immense, widespread stage where artists perform without a fee, collecting only spontaneous donations from the public in their proverbial hat.
The festival was born in 1988 from the intuition of Stefano Bottoni, a blacksmith from Ferrara with a passion for music, who proposed the idea to the municipal administration. Since then, the festival has grown to become an international phenomenon, capable of attracting hundreds of artists and tens of thousands of spectators from all over Italy and abroad to Ferrara. Historically, the event hosted a guest nation (and later a city) each edition, from New York to Dublin to Copenhagen, always maintaining a strong focus on dialogue between different cultures.
The festival goes far beyond impromptu concerts on street corners. The program includes:
The setting also makes the event unique: Ferrara, the capital of the province of the same name in Emilia-Romagna, is one of Italy's most fascinating art cities, famous for the Este Castle, its walls, and the Renaissance urban planning of the Herculean Addition. Strolling through its illuminated squares in the evening, stopping from one performance area to another to listen to a string quartet, applaud an acrobat, or be surprised by a juggler, is an experience that uniquely blends great popular music and historical heritage.
The 39th edition of the Ferrara Buskers Festival once again brings the world's largest street musician showcase to the historic center of Ferrara. The route features 259 artists from 19 countries โ from Australia to Japan, from South Korea to Canada โ with the first-ever participation of Taiwan. There's a strong youth component, with 121 artists under 35, and a focus on environmental themes and female presence. The proven formula is confirmed: over 60 shows each evening, talks, readings, workshops, exhibitions, a street food area, and the Artisan Craft Market.
Performance times in the historic center: Wednesday to Saturday from 7:00 PM to midnight; Sunday in the afternoon/evening. Performances repeat continuously at various locations in streets and squares (including Piazza Trento e Trieste), with two artists per location.
The detailed program with the complete artist list and map of locations will be published on the official website in the weeks leading up to the event.
