About Sorrento Ferragosto Fireworks

Every August 15th, the sky over the Gulf of Naples lights up above Sorrento. Fireworks are launched from floating platforms moored off the coast, creating a spectacular display visible from the city's panoramic terraces, Marina Grande, and much of the Sorrento Peninsula. The evening coincides with the religious Feast of the Assumption, celebrated locally with particular devotion in the hilltop hamlet of Casarlano. Free admission, in the province of Naples.

The brightest Ferragosto on the Sorrento Peninsula

In Sorrento, in the heart of the Metropolitan City of Naples overlooking the gulf of the same name, the night of August 15th features an event that has become a staple of the Campania summer: the Ferragosto Fireworks. Just before midnight, thousands of people gather along the viewpoints, hotel terraces, piers, and boats at anchor, and for a few magical minutes, the sky above the sea becomes the evening's main stage.

A show designed to be seen from the sea

The uniqueness of this event is technical as much as it is scenic. The fireworks are not launched from a square or a pier, but from floating platforms moored off the Sorrento coast, positioned to ensure maximum visibility both from the city's viewpoints and from neighboring towns on the peninsula. The result is a choreography that reflects on the water and can be admired from a wide stretch of coastline, with the silhouette of Mount Vesuvius framing the horizon. In the 2025 edition, the show began at 11:30 PM and lasted for about half an hour, with glowing trails lighting up the stroke of midnight.

Who is behind the initiative

The Ferragosto Fireworks are not a municipal event: they are entirely funded by a group of local tourism entrepreneurs together with Federalberghi Penisola Sorrentina, with the support of hoteliers, restaurateurs, and beach club managers. The president of Federalberghi Sorrentina, Costanzo Iaccarino, explained the spirit of the initiative with a phrase that has become a ritual: it is the territory's way of thanking guests and locals for their hospitality. This is also why the event is completely free: there are no tickets, no reserved stands, just the sky to watch.

The Feast of the Assumption

August 15th remains, first and foremost, a religious holiday. On the Sorrento Peninsula, the solemnity of the Assumption is experienced with great popular participation: in Sorrento, the most deep-rooted tradition is that of the hilltop hamlet of Casarlano, where the parish of Santa Maria carries the statue of the Madonna Assunta in a procession through the village streets, including Via San Valerio, Via Cesarano, Via Cala, and Via Baranica. In neighboring towns, the celebration takes the form of a sea procession, with the statue of the Virgin carried on a fishing boat decorated with flowers and lights. Popular faith and pyrotechnic spectacle thus coexist on the same day, as is the case in many coastal festivals in the South.

Where to watch the fireworks

  • Marina Grande, the ancient fishing village, with a low and close-up view of the sea
  • Marina Piccola and the port area
  • The panoramic terraces in the center and the viewpoints overlooking the bay
  • Neighboring towns on the peninsula, from Sant'Agnello to Piano di Sorrento, up to Massa Lubrense
  • From the sea, aboard boats and gozzi: the preferred perspective for those who know the coast

An evening that involves the whole coast

On the same night, other locations on the peninsula and the Amalfi Coast also light up their own pyrotechnic displays at staggered times: those in elevated positions can often see multiple fireworks sequences along the coastline. The event is surrounded by terrace dinners, outdoor musical evenings, and beach parties, making the Sorrento Ferragosto one of the busiest nights of the Campania summer.

Tips for a great experience

The city is at maximum capacity on August 15th: it is advisable to arrive well in advance, get around on foot, and keep in mind that the streets of the center and the paths down to the marinas will be very crowded until late at night. The show is always subject to weather and sea conditions, which may cause it to be postponed or canceled at the last minute.

Sorrento Ferragosto Fireworks — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Sorrento Ferragosto Fireworks has not yet been officially announced. The event is traditionally linked to the night of August 15th, the Solemnity of the Assumption, with the fireworks display launched from floating platforms off the Sorrento coast, visible from the marinas and panoramic terraces of the city, in the province of Naples. Times and confirmations will be communicated by the organizers in the preceding weeks.

At the time of writing, no official announcement regarding the 2026 edition of the Sorrento Ferragosto Fireworks has been published. The initiative, funded by Federalberghi Penisola Sorrentina and a group of local tourism entrepreneurs, has been held consistently in previous years on the night of August 15th, but confirmation for the current year is still pending from the organizers.

Those planning a stay on the Sorrento Peninsula during Ferragosto can keep an eye on local press channels and hotelier communications, which usually release start times and information on viewing points only a few days before the event. The religious celebrations of the Madonna Assunta, which in Sorrento are centered in the hamlet of Casarlano, remain confirmed.

This page will be updated as soon as the official date, time, and details for the 2026 edition become available.
