About Madonna della Provvidenza

Every year during the second week of August, Zafferana Etnea gathers around its patron saint, Santa Maria della Provvidenza, the Virgin who, according to tradition, stopped the 1792 lava flow from Mount Etna. From Saturday to Monday, the Etnean village experiences three intense days of faith and folklore: the triduum recited in dialect, the offering of wax at the monumental shrine, the solemn Sunday pontifical mass, and the long procession of the wooden fercolo through the town streets, accompanied by brass bands, festive bells, and fireworks.

A patronal feast at the foot of Mount Etna

The Feast of the Madonna della Provvidenza is the patronal celebration of Zafferana Etnea, a charming town in the Metropolitan City of Catania (Sicily), nestled on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna. Every year, during the second week of August, the village comes to a standstill to honor its celestial patron, Santa Maria della Provvidenza, in an event that weaves together popular devotion, centuries-old traditions, and the unique atmosphere of the Etnean foothills.

The legend of the Virgin who stopped the lava

Zafferana's devotion dates back to 1747, when the faithful were granted permission to celebrate the Madonna with a solemn procession. However, the event that forever etched this feast into the community's heart was the miracle of 1792: according to tradition, during a violent eruption of Mount Etna, the statue of the Virgin was carried to the lava front and miraculously halted the advance of the fire, saving the town. To commemorate the event, a monumental altar was erected in 1861 at the spot where the lava stopped. The date of the feast, originally in October and later in September, was moved to August in the 19th century to allow emigrants to return and participate in the festivities.

Three days of faith and folklore

The solemn festivities begin in the week leading up to the feast's Sunday, starting on Wednesday with the first day of the preparatory triduum. The Mother Church is adorned with gold-embroidered vestments, while streetlights are installed and balconies are decorated with colorful bunting. During the triduum, the traditional Coroncina is recited in the local dialect, passed down from generation to generation.

  • Saturday — In the afternoon, the brass band marches through the town streets playing festive tunes; in the evening, after Holy Mass, the procession with the offering of the wax to the Virgin takes place at the monumental shrine at the town entrance, accompanied by the first fireworks displays.
  • Sunday — This is the liturgical heart of the feast, featuring the solemn pontifical mass celebrated on the parvis of the Mother Church and brass bands enlivening the square at noon.
  • Monday — After the evening Mass, the grand procession of the wooden fercolo (the Vara) begins: the polychrome statue of the patron saint, carved in wood and decorated in gold leaf, adorned with necklaces, bracelets, and rings donated as ex-voto offerings by the locals, travels for about four hours through the town streets, reaching the peripheral districts amidst the sound of bells, the band, and fireworks. The final fireworks display concludes the celebrations.

Tradition, taste, and hospitality

As the fercolo passes, the faithful offer bouquets of flowers and monetary donations in a climate of deep participation. Alongside the religious moments, the three days are filled with cultural and musical events, folklore shows, popular music concerts, stands featuring local specialties, and traditional dances. Zafferana Etnea, famous for its honey and autumn festivals, welcomes devotees and visitors alike in an atmosphere that blends the spirituality of the patronal feast with the scenic charm of the Etnean villages.
