The patronal feast of Santa Venerina, on the slopes of Mount Etna
The Feast of Saint Venera is the main religious and civil event of the Municipality of Santa Venerina, in the Province of Catania, in the heart of eastern Sicily. The town, nestled on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna at an altitude of about 337 meters, owes its name to its patron saint and celebrates her memory every year with days of devotion, music, and popular tradition.
The solemn festivities are held on the Sunday following July 26th, the day the Church liturgically commemorates Saint Venera, virgin and martyr. The celebration therefore falls on the last Sunday of July and represents the most anticipated moment of the summer in Santa Venerina, capable of attracting faithful, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns.
In the three days preceding the feast, a well-attended three-day preparation is held in the Mother Church, culminating in the singing of solemn vespers on Saturday evening. On Sunday, from the early hours of the morning, fireworks announce the feast day: around 10:15 AM, before the solemn pontifical mass, the chapel where the statue of the Saint rests is opened, welcomed by the people and moved to the high altar, where it remains exposed until the evening.
After the evening mass, the long procession of the statue begins, crossing the various parishes of the town and winding through the streets of the center to the main square. Amidst prayers, hymns, and the moving participation of the faithful, the pageant concludes around midnight with the return to the Mother Church and the repositioning of the statue inside its chapel.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers musical events and social gatherings organized year after year in the main square, with shows and entertainment designed for families, children, and visitors. The evening traditionally closes in the spirit of conviviality that characterizes Sicilian patronal feasts.
Santa Venerina is located in an area dedicated to viticulture: its territory falls within the production area of the renowned Etna DOC wine and is also famous for its historic distilleries that produce liqueurs and rosolios. Experiencing the patronal feast therefore means immersing oneself not only in local devotion but also in the food, wine, and cultural identity of an authentic Etna village, far from mass tourism circuits.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Venera in Santa Venerina is scheduled for Sunday, July 26, the last Sunday of the month and the day of the patron saint's liturgical memory. As per tradition, the festivities will be preceded by a three-day preparation in the Mother Church with solemn vespers on Saturday.
The feast day includes morning fireworks, the opening of the statue's chapel, the solemn pontifical mass, and, in the evening, the long procession that crosses the town's parishes to the main square, where musical and entertainment events will be held. The detailed program of the 2026 civil and musical events has not yet been published: it will be released by the festival committee and the parish in the weeks leading up to the feast.
Santa Venerina is easily reached by car from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway, Giarre exit, continuing inland towards Mount Etna. By train, the reference station is Giarre-Riposto on the Messina-Catania line, from which you can continue with local buses or taxis. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about 40 km away.
The heart of the festival is the Mother Church of Saint Venera and the streets of the historic center, up to the main square where musical events are held.
Access to religious celebrations and events in the square is free and open to all. It is advisable to arrive early to attend the evening procession and to take advantage of the visit to discover the wineries and distilleries of the Etna area.
