The patronal feast of Aci Catena in honor of the Madonna della Catena, blending centuries-old faith with Ferragosto traditions
In the heart of the province of Catania, at the foot of Mount Etna and just a few kilometers from the Ionian coast, the town of Aci Catena celebrates its patron saint, Maria Santissima della Catena, every year. The festival, traditionally held on August 15th and 16th, is the most significant moment of the year for the entire community and is the very namesake of the town.
The origins of the cult date back to the 15th century, during the reign of Martin I of Aragon, and were inspired by the famous miracle of the Madonna della Catena in Palermo. The devotion was further strengthened after the 1693 earthquake that devastated the Val di Noto: the church housing the precious 15th-century icon collapsed, but the altar, the icon, and the statue remained intact. The population attributed their survival to the protection of the Madonna, and the bond with their patron saint has remained unbroken ever since.
The heart of the festival is the precious statue of the Madonna, kept in the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Catena, the Mother Church elevated to a diocesan sanctuary. The statue, solemnly crowned on August 14, 1957, with a golden crown donated by the artisan class, is carried in procession through the decorated streets of the town in a triumph of faith and color.
The festivities are marked by a sequence of traditional gestures that are repeated identically year after year:
Alongside the religious rites, the Aci Catena festival preserves the typical popular dimension of Sicilian patronal feasts: the incanto (charity auction to raise funds), the illuminations lighting up the historic center, the brass band, and the fireworks. A second celebration, the Thanksgiving Feast on January 11th, commemorates the protection received during the 1693 earthquake each year.
Experiencing these days in Aci Catena means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic expressions of popular religiosity in Eastern Sicily, where devotion becomes a celebration for the entire community.
The 2026 patronal feast of Aci Catena (province of Catania) will take place on the usual dates of August 15th and 16th, in honor of Maria Santissima della Catena.
As per tradition, the celebration will open with the Consolato and the ringing of the "Campana Maria", continue on August 15th with the morning Svelata of the statue and the solemn afternoon procession through the town streets, and culminate on August 16th with the Trasuta o chianu, the festive entry of the float into the square amidst the waving of handkerchiefs.
The complete liturgical and civil program, including precise times for services, the procession, and festivities, will be announced closer to the event.
The most anticipated moments remain the Svelata of the statue on the morning of August 15th, the procession through the decorated streets, and above all the Trasuta o chianu on August 16th, with the float's spirited entry into the square.
Aci Catena is located in the province of Catania, along the Ionian coast. By car, it can be reached via the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Acireale exit) or the SS114 road. Catania-Fontanarossa Airport is approximately 20 km away. The nearest train station is in Acireale.
The main festivities take place on August 15th and 16th each year. The Thanksgiving Feast is celebrated on January 11th.
Admission to the celebrations and the procession is free. As this coincides with the Ferragosto holiday period, it is advisable to book accommodation in the Acireale and Etna area well in advance.
