About Feast of the Catena

Every year on August 15th and 16th, Aci Catena (in the province of Catania) gathers around its patron saint, Maria Santissima della Catena. It is the town's most cherished patronal festival: an event that weaves together Marian devotion, ancient rituals, and the vibrant atmosphere of the Sicilian Ferragosto. From the nocturnal tolling of the "Campana Maria" to the "Svelata" (unveiling) of the 17th-century statue and the evocative "Trasuta o chianu", the community experiences two days of deep popular participation.

A devotion spanning the centuries

In the heart of the province of Catania, at the foot of Mount Etna and just a few kilometers from the Ionian coast, the town of Aci Catena celebrates its patron saint, Maria Santissima della Catena, every year. The festival, traditionally held on August 15th and 16th, is the most significant moment of the year for the entire community and is the very namesake of the town.

The origins of the cult date back to the 15th century, during the reign of Martin I of Aragon, and were inspired by the famous miracle of the Madonna della Catena in Palermo. The devotion was further strengthened after the 1693 earthquake that devastated the Val di Noto: the church housing the precious 15th-century icon collapsed, but the altar, the icon, and the statue remained intact. The population attributed their survival to the protection of the Madonna, and the bond with their patron saint has remained unbroken ever since.

The statue and the Sanctuary

The heart of the festival is the precious statue of the Madonna, kept in the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Catena, the Mother Church elevated to a diocesan sanctuary. The statue, solemnly crowned on August 14, 1957, with a golden crown donated by the artisan class, is carried in procession through the decorated streets of the town in a triumph of faith and color.

The rituals of the festival

The festivities are marked by a sequence of traditional gestures that are repeated identically year after year:

  • The Consolato (or Cunsulato): the solemn announcement of the festival, accompanied by the characteristic sound of the "Campana Maria" bell.
  • The Svelata: on the morning of August 15th, the opening of the chapel and the transfer of the statue to the high altar.
  • The Procession: on the afternoon of August 15th, the triumphant exit of the processional float and the long parade through the city streets.
  • The Trasuta o chianu: on August 16th, the festive entry of the float into the square amidst the waving of white handkerchiefs, the most emotional and anticipated moment of the entire festival.

Between the sacred and the popular

Alongside the religious rites, the Aci Catena festival preserves the typical popular dimension of Sicilian patronal feasts: the incanto (charity auction to raise funds), the illuminations lighting up the historic center, the brass band, and the fireworks. A second celebration, the Thanksgiving Feast on January 11th, commemorates the protection received during the 1693 earthquake each year.

Experiencing these days in Aci Catena means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic expressions of popular religiosity in Eastern Sicily, where devotion becomes a celebration for the entire community.
