On May 21, Piana di Monte Verna commemorates the 1860 miracle
In the calendar of Piana di Monte Verna, a small town in the Province of Caserta overlooking the Volturno valley in Campania, May 21 is no ordinary date. It is the day the entire community gathers around the statue of the Immaculate Virgin, known here by a name that says it all: the Immaculate of the Miracle. This is not a staged festival or a commercial fair, but an unbroken popular devotion rooted in a stormy night in 1860 that still draws the entire town out into the streets today.
The local account is precise. On the late afternoon of May 21, 1860, a violent cloudburst hit Piana. People took refuge in the church and decided to display the ancient image of the Immaculate for public veneration. As the statue was lowered from its niche, men noticed it was wet, even though the niche was perfectly dry. A hole—still visible today—had appeared on the Virgin's head, from which a liquid seeped, soaking her face and mantle. The phenomenon continued past midnight and ceased around four in the morning when the sky cleared.
That same night, the Bishop of Caiazzo, Monsignor Luigi Riccio, reached the town accompanied by two canons. After witnessing the event, he declared it a true miracle. These were the tumultuous months of the Unification of Italy, and while no formal canonical inquiry was ever opened, the community has solemnly observed every May 21 since without interruption.
The heart of the feast is the Church of the Holy Spirit, the town's parish, which was proclaimed the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception on December 11, 1960, by Cardinal Alfonso Castaldo, Archbishop of Naples, on the centenary of the miracle. It houses the wooden statue linked to the miracle, which has survived dramatic events: the tradition of lighting candles on doorsteps also commemorates the fires that damaged the image in the past.
The celebration does not begin on May 21; it is preceded by an essential novena, entirely dedicated to the Virgin, animated in turn by various parish groups with high participation. During the vigil, ancient folk hymns are performed—a devotional repertoire passed down orally from generation to generation. In some editions, the night of the miracle is also re-enacted, featuring the voice of the parish priest from that time.
The most intense moment is the evening of May 21, with a solemn mass and a procession through the town center, during which the Rosary to the Immaculate of the Miracle is recited. As the statue passes, citizens place candles on doors, windows, and balconies, turning the town into a path of small lights accompanying the Virgin. It is also the evening when, by custom, children born during the year are entrusted to the Immaculate, while First Communions are scheduled in the days immediately preceding the feast.
With just over two thousand inhabitants, Piana di Monte Verna is located north of Caserta, between the Volturno river and the first hills rising toward Caiazzo and Monte Verna, in an agricultural area known for its olive oil and Caserta wines. The parish also includes the churches of Santa Maria a Marciano and Madonna delle Grazie, testaments to an ancient rural fabric. Visitors will find a close-knit town where the Feast of the Immaculate remains the main identity-defining event of the year, capable of drawing back emigrants and families originally from the area.
In 2026, the community of Piana di Monte Verna chose to suspend civil festivities to channel all collected donations toward the restoration of the parish Church of the Holy Spirit, the sanctuary housing the image of the Immaculate. A decision that brought the day back to its most essential and devotional dimension.
With the construction site open, celebrations were moved to the nearby Suffragio chapel, where the statue is currently kept. Father Salvatore Di Chello celebrated the first mass at 8:00 AM, followed by a second Eucharistic celebration at 11:00 AM.
At 6:00 PM, the solemn mass was held outdoors in the town square to accommodate the large number of faithful. Afterward, the procession began, during which the Rosary to the Immaculate of the Miracle was recited. As per tradition, citizens placed candles on doors and windows as the statue passed, a gesture that also recalls the two fires that caused the destruction of the image in the past.
The day was prepared, as every year, by the Marian novena animated by various parish groups, a moment of prayer and gathering for the entire town.
Due to restoration work in the parish Church of the Holy Spirit, celebrations were held in the Suffragio chapel, where the statue of the Immaculate is kept.
In the preceding days: Marian novena of preparation, animated in turn by parish groups.
Note: In 2026, civil festivities were suspended to allocate community donations to the ongoing restoration of the parish church.
