About Assumption in Policastro

Every August 15th, Policastro Bussentino, the seaside district of the Municipality of Santa Marina, celebrates the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with one of the most heartfelt festivals in the Gulf of Policastro. The day begins with a solemn Mass in the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, continues with a procession through the village alleys, and culminates in a sea parade, where the statue of the Virgin is carried on festively decorated fishing boats. Illuminations, live music, Cilento food stalls, and fireworks conclude the evening.

The most anticipated August 15th in the Gulf of Policastro

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the highlight of the summer in Policastro Bussentino, the seaside district of the Municipality of Santa Marina, in the province of Salerno, in lower Cilento at the southern tip of Campania. On August 15th, the village overlooking the Gulf of Policastro sets aside its beach routine to gather around its patron saint: a day where faith, folklore, and community life intertwine from early morning until the fireworks at the end of the evening.

The solemn Mass in the Co-Cathedral

The religious heart of the festival is the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the mother church of Policastro and seat, along with the cathedral of Teggiano, of the Teggiano-Policastro diocese. The building preserves an ancient crypt with fourteen marble and granite columns and a Romanesque bell tower: entering here on the day of the Assumption means crossing over a thousand years of Cilento history. The morning's solemn Mass draws faithful from the village and neighboring hamlets, along with the many emigrants who return to their hometown specifically for Ferragosto.

The procession by land and sea

After the celebration, the statue of the Virgin is carried on shoulders along the alleys of the historic center, amidst songs, prayers, and houses decorated for the occasion. The procession then reaches the port of Policastro, where the festival takes on its most characteristic form: the sea procession. The statue is embarked and accompanied by a parade of fishing boats and private vessels that leave the port and travel along the stretch of coast in front of the village. It is the moment when the maritime community asks for the Madonna's protection for those who work at sea, and from the pier or the promenade, the view is among the most evocative of the entire Cilento coast.

Illuminations, music, and flavors of Cilento

At sunset, the festival changes pace. The streets of the historic center and the promenade light up with colorful illuminations and floral decorations, while the squares host concerts and local folk music groups. There is no shortage of food stalls, where one can taste Cilento cuisine dishes accompanied by local wines: a stop that, for many families, is a Ferragosto ritual in itself. The evening closes with a pyrotechnic display over the sea, which reflects on the waters of the gulf and brings residents and tourists together along the beach.

What to see and experience during the festival

  • Solemn Mass in the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
  • Procession through the village streets, with the statue carried on shoulders by the faithful
  • Sea procession, departing from the port of Policastro on fishing boats
  • Illuminations and floral decorations in the historic center and on the promenade
  • Concerts and live music with local groups
  • Food stalls with Cilento specialties and local wines
  • Concluding fireworks display overlooking the gulf

Policastro Bussentino, an ancient village by the sea

The festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most layered places on the Campanian coast. Policastro, the ancient Pyxous and later Roman Buxentum, preserves sections of ancient walls, the medieval core around the cathedral, and the castle that dominates the village, while behind it opens the mouth of the Bussento river and the territory of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The Municipality of Santa Marina, which includes both the hilltop capital and the seaside district, is today one of the most popular destinations in the Gulf of Policastro, with beaches, a tourist port, and an inland area rich in trails.

Why it is worth the trip

Compared to the large patronal festivals of cities, the Assumption festival in Policastro retains a cozy and authentic dimension: there is no ticket, no monumental stage, but an entire community accompanying its patron from the churchyard to the harbor. Those spending their holidays in southern Cilento, between Sapri, Vibonati, Ispani, and Santa Marina, find here the most intense moment of the season, with a program that combines liturgy, maritime tradition, and street festivities.
