San Pietro al Tanagro is a village of just over 1,500 inhabitants nestled at an altitude of about 450 meters in the Vallo di Diano, in the province of Salerno. The town is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park and retains an urban layout divided into two historic centers: San Pietro, which grew around the church dedicated to the Apostle, and the Torre, also known as Borgo Palazzo due to the presence of ancient noble residences. It is precisely within this maze of alleys and small squares that, every June 29th, the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul takes place, the most defining event for the community.

The ritual of the Fountain of Milk and Wine

What makes the patronal feast of San Pietro al Tanagro unique is not so much the liturgical solemnity — shared with dozens of Italian towns that honor Saints Peter and Paul on June 29th — but a ritual gesture that has been repeated here for generations: the Fountain of Milk and Wine. In a small square in the Torre district, a wooden structure is assembled from which, through connecting pipes, two distinct jets emerge: one of milk and one of wine, the latter diluted with water. The two liquids were once offered to the faithful as a sign of blessing and a wish for a prosperous agricultural year.

During the procession, the statue of the Saint stops in front of the fountain for about ten minutes before continuing its journey through the village streets. It is the emotional focal point of the entire day: milk and wine represent the fruits of the earth and the labor of the stables, the two pillars upon which the local economy rested for centuries, and their public offering is both a thanksgiving and a request for protection.

The origins of the tradition

The origins of the fountain are lost in time. Popular memory traces it back to the era when the town lived almost exclusively on agriculture and livestock: it was supposedly built as a sign of devotion to Saint Peter the Apostle and as a propitiatory rite for the abundance of harvests and the health of the livestock. It is one of the most genuine forms of rural religiosity remaining alive in the Vallo di Diano, where the festival calendar has always closely followed the rhythms of the seasons and work in the fields.

The village and its churches

The patronal day is also the best opportunity to discover the town's religious heritage. The Mother Church of Saint Peter the Apostle, in Largo Chiesa, houses a fine marble altar and is the starting point of the celebrations. Not far away is the Church of Santa Maria del Piano, built in 1530 and linked to the legend of the discovery of a statue of the Madonna among the branches of a hornbeam tree. The picture is completed by the Baroque-style Church of Saint John the Baptist and the small Chapel of Saint Vito.

The local festival calendar

The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul is the cornerstone of a rather rich devotional calendar. Throughout the year, the community also celebrates Saint Joseph in March, the Madonna of the Rosary in the spring, and the procession of the Holy Cross in September, while summer brings more secular appointments, from the fish festival in July to evenings dedicated to the ancient milling culture of the Rural Mills Park.
