The patronal feast of Brusciano, held every January 20th in the heart of the town
January 20th is the most anticipated day of the year in Brusciano, a populous town in the Nola area, within the Metropolitan City of Naples and the Campania region. On this date, the community celebrates Saint Sebastian the Martyr, the town's patron saint, with a festival rooted in the centuries-old devotion of the inhabitants toward the Roman soldier-saint, invoked since ancient times as a protector against epidemics and adversity.
The festival revolves around the Saint Sebastian the Martyr Parish, the town's mother church led by parish priest Father Salvatore Purcaro. In the days leading up to the anniversary, a triduum and a novena of preparation take place, with evening celebrations that bring the faithful together. On January 20th, Holy Masses mark the entire day, culminating in a solemn concelebration. In various editions, the celebrations have been presided over by the Bishop of Nola, Monsignor Francesco Marino, testifying to the bond between the Brusciano community and the Diocese of Nola.
The central moment of the festivities is the procession: the statue of Saint Sebastian is carried on shoulders through the streets of the center, accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and the brass band, amidst decorations, lights, and the warm participation of the entire town. It is the most authentic expression of Campanian popular religiosity, where the street becomes a shared space for prayer and celebration.
In recent years, the patronal feast has also taken on a strong dimension of solidarity. The parish, with the patronage of the Municipality of Brusciano, has promoted charitable initiatives such as Sapori di casa (Home Flavors), convivial evenings featuring local restaurateurs, pizza makers, and artists, with proceeds donated to charitable works for the most vulnerable people in the area. The martyr's witness thus becomes a concrete invitation to hospitality and sharing.
The January festival is one of the two great devotional recurrences of Brusciano, also famous for the Ballata dei Gigli in the summer. Participating in the patronal feast of Saint Sebastian means immersing yourself in the identity of a community in the Neapolitan hinterland, amidst faith, music, tradition, and the typical hospitality of Campania.
