Mid-August festivities in honor of Saint Roch in Bitritto
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Bitritto, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari in the heart of Puglia, the Feast of Saint Roch is one of the most anticipated events of the summer. Every year, around August 16th—the day the liturgy commemorates the pilgrim Saint from Montpellier—the community gathers in devotion with a series of celebrations that combine religious observance with festive, popular spirit.
The veneration of Saint Roch in Bitritto is deeply rooted in a long tradition of faith linked to protection against epidemics, for which the Saint is invoked as a patron throughout Italy. This cult is guarded by the Confraternity of Saint Roch and the Transfiguration Parish, which organize the festivities each year. The small Church of Saint Roch, located in the historic center, remains the spiritual heart of the feast and the starting point for the most solemn moments.
The days of the festival are marked by liturgical services: Holy Masses celebrated in the Church of Saint Roch, communal prayer, and, as the highlight, the solemn procession of the Saint's statue through the streets of the center, accompanied by the faithful, local authorities, and the sound of the brass band. The recurrence coincides with the nearby Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15th, creating a weave of celebrations that involves the entire town during the Ferragosto week.
As is customary in Puglian patronal festivals, the religious rites are accompanied by a secular program: illuminations light up the main streets and squares, the brass band provides the quintessential music of village festivals, and there is no shortage of evening entertainment and, often, a fireworks display to conclude the festivities. It is the moment when the community of Bitritto gathers in the streets, amidst stalls, sweets, and the warm atmosphere of August evenings.
Located just a few kilometers from the regional capital, Bitritto preserves a compact historic center dominated by its Norman-Swabian castle. For the inhabitants, the Feast of Saint Roch represents an occasion for homecoming and collective identity—a thread that binds generations together and keeps alive a popular devotion that, in August, transforms the town into a place of encounter between the sacred and the festive.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Roch in Bitritto will take place, according to tradition, during the week of Ferragosto, around August 16th, the day dedicated to the Saint. The official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated: the religious program, with Masses in the Church of Saint Roch and the procession through the historic center, and the civil program, with illuminations and band concerts, will be released by the Confraternity of Saint Roch and the Transfiguration Parish in the weeks leading up to the festival. It is recommended to follow the organizers' official channels for updates.
Bitritto is located about 10 km south of Bari and is easily accessible by car from the city's ring road. By train, the reference station is Bari Centrale, which is connected to the town by suburban bus lines.
The festivities take place in mid-August, coinciding with the liturgical feast of Saint Roch (August 16th).
Religious celebrations and public square events are free to attend.
Updates and programs are shared through the official channels of the Confraternity of Saint Roch of Bitritto and the Transfiguration Parish.
