Every year, around August 16th—the day the liturgy commemorates the pilgrim Saint from Montpellier—the community gathers in devotion with a series of celebrations that combine religious observance with festive, popular spirit.

A cult rooted in the community

The veneration of Saint Roch in Bitritto is deeply rooted in a long tradition of faith linked to protection against epidemics, for which the Saint is invoked as a patron throughout Italy. This cult is guarded by the Confraternity of Saint Roch and the Transfiguration Parish, which organize the festivities each year. The small Church of Saint Roch, located in the historic center, remains the spiritual heart of the feast and the starting point for the most solemn moments.

The religious program

The days of the festival are marked by liturgical services: Holy Masses celebrated in the Church of Saint Roch, communal prayer, and, as the highlight, the solemn procession of the Saint's statue through the streets of the center, accompanied by the faithful, local authorities, and the sound of the brass band. The recurrence coincides with the nearby Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15th, creating a weave of celebrations that involves the entire town during the Ferragosto week.
