The patronal feast of Bagnoregio in honor of the Seraphic Doctor, July 15th
Every July 15th, the community of Bagnoregio, in the Province of Viterbo, in the heart of the Lazio Tuscia region, pays homage to its Patron Saint, Saint Bonaventure. He is no ordinary patron: Giovanni Fidanza, the saint's baptismal name, was born around 1217 in this very land and became one of the most enlightened theologians of the Middle Ages, Minister General of the Franciscan Order, cardinal, and bishop, proclaimed a Doctor of the Church with the title Doctor Seraphicus. The feast thus unites popular devotion with the memory of a figure of European stature, in a bond of identity that the municipality has preserved for centuries.
The heart of the feast is the solemn Eucharistic celebration in the Co-cathedral of San Nicola, Donato and Bonaventura, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Viterbo, of which Saint Bonaventure is a co-patron. At the end of the mass, the faithful are blessed with the precious relic of the holy arm, kept in a silver reliquary: it is one of the most intense and heartfelt moments of the entire day.
On the eve of the feast, the confraternities of the Bagnoregio vicariate hold their traditional annual pilgrimage, gathering in procession with their banners, acting as authentic guardians of faith and local traditions. The statue of the patron saint is then carried in procession through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the musical band, in a pageant that involves the entire citizenry.
Surrounding the religious functions are the civil events of the feast, featuring evening shows, music, illuminations, and the traditional fireworks that light up the village sky. The streets come alive with stalls where you can taste local specialties: nociata, a walnut and honey-based sweet, and the famous porchetta, staples of Bagnoregio's gastronomy.
The feast is also the ideal opportunity to discover Bagnoregio and its most famous hamlet, Civita di Bagnoregio, the "dying city" perched on the badlands and reachable on foot via a long pedestrian bridge: according to tradition, Saint Bonaventure was born in Civita. Experiencing the patronal feast means immersing yourself in the most authentic soul of this corner of Lazio, where spirituality, history, and landscape blend into an unforgettable experience.
In the 2026 edition, celebrations culminated on Tuesday, July 14th, with the annual pilgrimage of the confraternities of the Bagnoregio vicariate, who gathered in procession with their banners. On July 15th, the solemnity of the patron saint, the Bishop of Viterbo, Monsignor Orazio Francesco Piazza, presided over the solemn Eucharistic celebration in the Co-cathedral of San Nicola, accompanied by the priests of the Bagnoregio and Montefiascone vicariates. At the end, the Bishop blessed those present with the relic of the holy arm. The statue of Saint Bonaventure was carried in procession through the village streets, accompanied by the band, amidst evening shows, fireworks, and stands with local specialties.
By car: from Rome or Florence via the A1 motorway, take the Orvieto exit, then the SS71 towards Bagnoregio (about 20 minutes). By train: Orvieto station on the Rome-Florence line, with Cotral bus connections to Bagnoregio.
The patronal feast is celebrated on July 15th, with festivities spread over the preceding days (confraternity procession on July 14th).
