Three days of faith, art, and entertainment in the heart of Messina, featuring the White Night and the Triumphal Chariot Procession
The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is one of the most significant events in the religious and civic calendar of Messina, in the heart of northeastern Sicily. Promoted by the Basilica Sanctuary of Saint Anthony of Padua, managed by the Rogationist Fathers, in collaboration with the Municipality of Messina and under the patronage of the Sicilian Region, the festivities transform the neighborhood around the sanctuary into a vast open-air stage where popular devotion merges with art, music, and entertainment.
The most anticipated moment is the White Night for Saint Anthony, an evening that brings Via Santa Cecilia, Via Cesare Battisti, and the Avignone district to life until late at night. Over twenty events, including concerts, shows, street performer acts, jugglers, dancers, and cultural initiatives, engage families, young people, seniors, tourists, and pilgrims alike. Artistic illuminations light up at dedicated times, guiding the public through extraordinary visits to the Basilica, its museums and crypts, exhibitions, and numerous food and wine stalls.
The religious heart of the festival is the Procession of the Triumphal Chariot: an imposing structure, several meters high, which carries the statue of the Saint on a large globe richly decorated with flowers. On Sunday, following the solemn morning Holy Mass and the parade of the marching band, the chariot travels through the city streets in a procession of deep participation, followed by fireworks and entertainment.
The program opens with the Saint Anthony Food Fest along Via Ghibellina, where food and wine stalls offer specialties of Messinese and Sicilian cuisine. Street food, traditional sweets, and local products accompany a festival that is also an opportunity for conviviality and discovering the popular identity of the Strait city.
Between faith, culture, and religious tourism, the Saint Anthony festivities represent a major draw for the entire metropolitan area of Messina and for pilgrims from all over Sicily. The combination of a traditional procession and a contemporary White Night makes it an event with deep local roots and growing tourist appeal.
The program opened on Friday, June 12 with the Saint Anthony Food Fest along Via Ghibellina. Saturday, June 13, from 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM, the 13th White Night for Saint Anthony animated Via Santa Cecilia, Via Cesare Battisti, and the Avignone district with over 350 artists, concerts, street performances, and fifteen food stalls, with light shows at 9:00 PM, 10:30 PM, and midnight.
Sunday, June 14, the solemn Holy Mass at 11:00 AM preceded the marching band parade at 6:00 PM and the Triumphal Chariot Procession with the statue of the Saint at 7:30 PM. The festival concluded with light shows and evening entertainment. A Holy Mass with an internal procession of the reliquary closed the celebrations on Sunday, June 21.
The festivities take place in the neighborhood surrounding the Basilica Sanctuary of Saint Anthony of Padua, between Via Santa Cecilia, Via Cesare Battisti, Via Ghibellina, and the Avignone district in Messina (Sicily).
Messina can be reached by train to the central station and by car via the A20 (MessinaโPalermo) and A18 (MessinaโCatania) motorways. From the mainland, you can arrive via the ferries that cross the Strait. During the White Night and the procession, traffic changes are expected in the sanctuary area: it is recommended to reach the area on foot.
Events for the White Night and the procession are free to attend. Some food and wine stalls require payment for purchases.
