The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is the most heartfelt event of the year for the seaside village of Arenella, an ancient fishing district overlooking the northern gulf of Palermo. For over two weeks, usually between late May and June 13th, the village streets are filled with illuminations, market stalls, and popular devotion in honor of the Saint whom the community considers its protector. The festival is organized by the Archconfraternity of Saint Anthony of Padua of Arenella, in collaboration with the parish and local associations.
The cult of Saint Anthony in Arenella has its roots in a legend passed down from generation to generation. In the 19th century, some fishermen pulled a statue of the Saint with a youthful face from the seabed, where it had become tangled in their nets along with a bountiful catch. Initially kept in a small church carved into a cave under the Torre del Rotolo, the statue became the subject of a dispute between the villages. The resulting agreement established that the Saint would remain in Arenella, but every year on June 13th, he would be taken by sea to Vergine Maria so that that community could also honor him. It is a tradition maintained to this day, to the local cry of the "rinidduoti": "ri cu รจ sant'Antoniu?โฆ u nuostru!" (Whose is Saint Anthony?โฆ Ours!).
The heart of the festival is the sea procession, one of the most evocative on the Palermo coast. The statue of Saint Anthony of the Fishermen is loaded onto a decorated fishing boat and accompanied by a procession of boats belonging to fishermen and devotees, who transport it along the coastline to the villages of Acquasanta and Vergine Maria. The marine parade, with the Saint advancing amidst water splashes and applause, represents the symbol of Arenella's maritime identity and its unbreakable bond with the sea.
Alongside the religious rite, the festival program offers numerous popular activities:
The festivities culminate on June 13th, the feast day of Saint Anthony, with a solemn procession through the streets of the village and the traditional fireworks that illuminate the gulf. An event that, in the heart of Palermo and Sicily, acts as a social glue and preserves the memory of maritime tradition.
The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua in Arenella returns in 2026 to celebrate the patron saint of the seaside village of Palermo. While awaiting the official program, the event is confirmed as one of the most evocative popular rites on the Palermo coast, featuring the historic sea procession towards Vergine Maria and Acquasanta. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the full calendar, times, and program will be communicated in the weeks prior by the parish and the Archconfraternity of Saint Anthony of Arenella.
The village of Arenella is located in the northern area of Palermo, along the coast. By car, it can be reached from the seafront and the port area; the district is served by AMAT urban bus lines. From the central station of Palermo, continue by public transport towards the northern coast (Acquasanta, Arenella, Vergine Maria).
The festival traditionally takes place in the first two weeks of June, culminating on June 13th. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
The patronal feast and the sea procession are open to the public and free of charge.
