Two days of faith and tradition in the car-free village of Monteviasco
Monteviasco, a hamlet of Curiglia con Monteviasco, is one of the most fascinating and secluded villages in the Province of Varese: perched above the Val Veddasca, at over 900 meters above sea level, it can only be reached on foot along the ancient mule track or by cable car. Here, every spring, the community gathers for the Feast of Our Lady of the Serta, dedicated to the sanctuary that overlooks the village.
The festival begins on Saturday evening with an itinerant concert by the Coro Stella del Cornet, which leads participants through the stone streets of the village to the church of Saints Martino and Barnaba. It is a evocative moment, where the choir's voices intertwine with the solemn atmosphere of the medieval alleys.
The main day is Sunday. From the church, the procession to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Serta departs, accompanied by the Banda di Curiglia and the choir. An ancient tradition, which each year entrusts a 'Priora' (female leader) with the symbolic role of guiding the festival. From noon, in the Brondò area, refreshments are offered with sausages, sweets, and drinks, in a convivial mountain atmosphere.
The event, organized by the Parish of San Vittore together with the association Monteviasco Borgo e Natura APS and local entities, also has a charitable purpose: the proceeds support the restoration of historical symbols of the village. For two days, the cable car operates continuously, allowing residents and visitors to easily reach this hidden corner of Lombardy.
The Feast of Our Lady of the Serta 2026 will animate Monteviasco on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31.
