The most anticipated patronal feast of the Prignano summer

Every year, on the second Sunday of August, Prignano Cilento—a small town of just over a thousand residents in the province of Salerno, Campania—renews its devotion to the Blessed Virgin of Good Counsel. It is the highlight of the local summer: for a few days, the village, nestled at over four hundred meters above sea level in the hills overlooking the Alento valley, fills with returning emigrants, families, and visitors from neighboring towns.

This is more than just a religious rite. The festival is a moment for the community to reconnect, strengthen bonds, and showcase its identity through song, color, fireworks, and music. First-time visitors will find an atmosphere that remains authentic, far removed from the large-scale tourist events of the coast.

The 'cente' arriving from Acquavella

The most distinctive moment of the festivities is the arrival of the faithful who set out from Acquavella carrying the traditional cente: votive structures made of paper, candles, and colorful ribbons, often quite large, carried on shoulders or heads throughout the journey. It is a pilgrimage that links two Cilento communities and is repeated from generation to generation, accompanied by devotional songs and intense popular participation.

Upon arrival in the village, the procession winds through the streets with the statue of the Madonna, greeted by the sound of the brass band and the entire village watching from their doorsteps. It is an image that perfectly captures the relationship between inland Cilento and its popular religiosity, rooted in concrete gestures, kept promises, and family memory.

Religious rites and secular celebrations

The calendar follows a consolidated pattern, repeated year after year:

• The novena in the days leading up to the feast, with evening prayers and celebrations;
• The feast day, featuring solemn masses, the procession, and the accompaniment of the brass band;
• The secular festivities, in the evening, with a fireworks display and a concert in the square;
• Conviviality, amidst illuminations, market stalls, and Cilento cuisine.

In the 2025 edition, the evening concluded with a concert by Aironi Neri, a Nomadi cover band, in front of a packed square: a choice that reflects the spirit of the festival, where popular Italian light music naturally complements the ritual.

A recognized devotion

In September 2025, local press reported on the blessing of the image of the Madonna of Good Counsel of Prignano Cilento by Pope Leo XIV: a recognition received with great pride by the community, which strengthened the bond between the town and its patroness and brought further visibility to a tradition previously known mainly within the local district.

Prignano Cilento, between the Alento and the sea

The municipal territory, which includes the hamlets of Melito and San Giuliano, borders Agropoli, Torchiara, Rutino, Ogliastro Cilento, Perito, and Cicerale. Nearby are the Alento River Oasis, an important protected natural area, and the beaches of the Gulf of Salerno. The festival is an excellent opportunity to discover inland Cilento, with its stone villages, olive groves, and Mediterranean diet. In the town center, the Palazzo Marchesale Cardone stands out with its characteristic cylindrical tower typical of Cilento architecture.

A lively town all summer long

The Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel is part of a summer calendar organized by the Pro Loco and the Municipality, which also includes Forni in Festa, dedicated to traditional Cilento dishes in the San Giuseppe district, Monday evening gastronomic events in Piazza Roma, and gatherings at Monte Pedrazzo, home to Big Bench no. 108. Those who choose Prignano Cilento for the patronal feast will find a village buzzing with life for most of the month, with the chance to alternate between devotion, good food, and walks in nature.
