The celebration of the patron saint of San Piero Patti, blending faith, processions, and the Maccheroni Festival
In the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, in the province of Messina, the small village of San Piero Patti dedicates its most heartfelt celebration to Maria SS. della Catena, the community's patron saint. The event takes place every year on the Sunday following Easter, known as Domenica in Albis, and has represented a core moment of collective identity for the town's inhabitants for centuries.
The cult of the Madonna della Catena has its roots in a famous miracle that occurred in Palermo in 1392: according to tradition, several men unjustly sentenced to death, chained near the church of the Madonna del Porto, invoked the Virgin during a violent storm and saw their chains miraculously break. Hence the name "della Catena" (of the Chain), a symbol of liberation from unjust imprisonment. In San Piero Patti, the devotion was introduced by the Orioles barons, originally from Palermo, and became deeply rooted in the life of the village. In 1602, Pope Alexander VII granted the Madonna's altar the title of "privileged altar".
The venerated wooden statue of the Madonna della Catena is kept in the Mother Church of San Pancrazio, inside a sumptuous Baroque chapel embellished with marble inlays, stuccoes, and a red marble balustrade. The statue, restored in 2013, depicts the Virgin wrapped in a wide mantle and crowned in silver, holding the Child and the chain, a sign of the grace received.
Religious celebrations begin with a three-day preparation period marked by the recitation of the Rosary and Holy Masses, culminating on Sunday afternoon with the solemn procession of the statue through the village streets, entrusted to the Confraternity of Maria SS. del Rosario and accompanied by the notes of the brass band. Alongside the devotional aspect, the festival retains its popular character with the traditional street market, which fills the streets and the central square with stalls, and the famous Maccheroni Festival, featuring pasta with sauce and live music. It is a celebration that attracts visitors from across the Nebrodi region and marks, in the local imagination, the beginning of the warm season in Sicily.
In 2026, the celebrations in honor of Maria SS. della Catena, patron saint of San Piero Patti, were held on Saturday, April 11th, and Sunday, April 12th, coinciding with Domenica in Albis. The program followed the usual schedule of religious moments and popular festivities, enlivening the center of the Nebrodi town for two days.
The celebrations concluded in the evening with the return of the statue to the Mother Church.
