The patronal feast of Trecastagni, on Mount Etna, in honor of Saint Nicholas of Bari
The Saint Nicholas Festival is the patronal feast of the town of Trecastagni, perched on the southeastern slopes of Mount Etna, in the province of Catania, Sicily. Saint Nicholas of Bari has been the official patron saint of the town since 1825, and devotion to him is deeply rooted in local religious history, tied to the Mother Church which dates back to the 15th century. Every year, the festivities involve the entire community, attracting faithful and visitors from the neighboring towns of the Etna area.
The celebrations span from the last Sunday of November until December 6th, the Saint's liturgical day, but reach their peak on the first Sunday of December, when the so-called external celebration with the grand procession takes place. The last Sunday of November marks the official opening, announced at dawn by blanks fired and the festive ringing of all the town's church bells.
The Saint Nicholas Festival combines a religious dimension with a popular celebration: the floral tribute from children, the town band's music, fireworks, and the choral participation of the inhabitants make this event one of the strongest identity-defining moments for Trecastagni. December 6th, the Saint's liturgical day, is dedicated exclusively to religious ceremonies, with the participation of local school students, and concludes with the repositioning of the statue in its chapel accompanied by devotional prayers.
Visiting Trecastagni during the patronal feast is also an opportunity to discover an Etna village rich in churches, historic palaces, and traditions, immersed in the volcanic landscapes and vineyards of the volcano's southeastern side, in an authentic corner of the province of Catania.
In 2026, the town of Trecastagni, in the province of Catania, will once again celebrate its patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Bari. According to tradition, the celebrations will open on the last Sunday of November with blanks fired at dawn and the ringing of all the church bells, culminating on the first Sunday of December with the grand procession of the statue through the town's districts up to Largo dei Bianchi. In 2026, the first Sunday of December falls exactly on December 6th, the liturgical day of Saint Nicholas.
At the moment, the official 2026 program with detailed dates and times for individual events has not yet been released: the Archpriest of the Mother Church has announced that it will be published closer to the festival. It is recommended to check the official channels of the parish and the municipality for updates.
Trecastagni is located about 17 km from Catania, on the southeastern side of Mount Etna. By car, it can be reached from the Catania ring road by taking the exits for the Etna towns and continuing along the SP4. By train or plane, the reference point is Catania (Catania-Fontanarossa airport and central station), continuing by bus or car towards the foothills.
The hub of the celebrations is the Mother Church of Saint Nicholas, in the historic center of Trecastagni; the procession passes through the Tondo, Sant'Alfio, and Matrice districts up to Largo dei Bianchi.
Participation in religious and civil celebrations is free.
