Lauria celebrates its patron saint, the priest of the poor
Domenico Lentini (Lauria, November 20, 1770 - February 25, 1828) is the patron saint of the city of Lauria, an important center in the province of Potenza in southern Basilicata. A priest of humble origins, ordained in 1794, he spent his entire life in his hometown, distinguishing himself through intense prayer, penance, and extraordinary charity towards the poor. He is remembered as the saint of "extraordinary everyday life," an example of virtues lived in daily simplicity.
In 1935, Pope Pius XI proclaimed him "Hero of the theological and cardinal virtues"; Pope John Paul II approved a miracle attributed to him and presided over his beatification on October 12, 1997. His remains are kept and displayed for the veneration of the faithful in the Church of San Nicola di Bari, in the upper district of Lauria.
On February 25th – the anniversary of the Blessed's death – his feast is celebrated as a liturgical solemnity in Lauria and as an obligatory memorial throughout the diocese. The celebrations are preceded by the novena, days of intense prayer that prepare the community. On the feast day, the mother church fills for solemn Masses, while devotion is expressed in the procession and moments of reflection around the Blessed's tomb.
The figure of Domenico Lentini remains deeply rooted in Lauria's identity: his feast is the time when the community gathers around its patron saint, recognizing in him a model of faith and service that is still relevant today. It is also an occasion to discover Lauria, its churches, and the bond between the town and its "priest of the storm.".
In 2026, on February 25th, Lauria will once again honor its patron saint Blessed Domenico Lentini with a liturgical solemnity. The celebrations, preceded by a novena starting February 20th, will focus on the Church of San Nicola di Bari, where the Blessed's remains rest, with solemn Masses and community participation.
The detailed religious program for the 2026 edition is organized by the parish of San Nicola di Bari. The traditional structure includes:
