Special evening openings of the Castle and the De Nittis Art Gallery
Every year, on a May evening, the European Night of Museums illuminates the historic center of Barletta, in the heart of the Barletta-Andria-Trani province in Puglia, with light and culture. The initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Culture and coordinated at a continental level under the patronage of UNESCO and the Council of Europe, features special evening openings of the city's main cultural institutions for a symbolic price of just one euro. It is an invitation to experience museums in a different way, after sunset, when the halls take on a more intimate and evocative atmosphere.
The heart of the event is the majestic Barletta Castle, a fortress overlooking the Adriatic Sea that houses the Civic Museum. During the Night of Museums, visitors can explore the various sections of the institution: the Ancient Gallery, the 19th and 20th Century Gallery, the Cafiero Gallery, and the evocative Lapidarium, with its collection of inscriptions and stone artifacts. Evening visits offer a privileged look at the city's thousand-year history, from its medieval origins to modern art.
The second hub of the event is the Baroque Palazzo della Marra, home to the "Giuseppe De Nittis" Art Gallery, dedicated to the great Impressionist painter born in Barletta in 1846. The permanent collection gathers paintings, pastels, and drawings that document the artist's career between Naples, London, and Paris. Alongside De Nittis's works, the Night of Museums offers annual temporary exhibitions dedicated to artistic heritage and its preservation.
Created to bring the general public closer to cultural sites, the European Night of Museums simultaneously involves hundreds of cities across Europe. The one-euro entrance fee and the evening hours, generally from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM, encourage participation from families and young people, turning the visit into a convivial and accessible experience. Often, the Barletta opening is accompanied by guided tours and thematic routes curated by museum staff.
Known as the "City of the Disfida" for the famous 1503 knightly challenge, Barletta preserves a significant historical and artistic heritage: from the Colossus of Heraclius to the Cathedral, from the Cantina della Disfida to the seafront. The European Night of Museums is the ideal opportunity to rediscover this treasure in the context of a cultural celebration, enhancing the identity of the Municipality of Barletta and the entire BAT province.
On Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM, Barletta joined the European Night of Museums with special openings of its main cultural institutions for a symbolic cost of 1 euro. At the Castle, the Civic Museum welcomed visitors to the Ancient Gallery, the 19th and 20th Century Gallery, the Cafiero Gallery, and the Lapidarium; the "Loffredo" library hosted guided tours of the "Literary Biblio-pharmacy: books that heal the soul" project. At Palazzo della Marra, alongside the permanent exhibition dedicated to Giuseppe De Nittis, the temporary exhibition "Custodians of Art: from the Monuments Men enterprise to the mission of the Carabinieri" was open, featuring about twenty works dedicated to the recovery of artistic heritage.
