European Mobility Week in Rome

The European Mobility Week is the most widespread European campaign dedicated to sustainable urban mobility. Launched in 2002 under the initiative of the European Commission, it involves thousands of cities across the continent every year from September 16 to 22. In Italy, the initiative is coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, and Rome Capital, through Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, is among the major centers participating with a calendar of events distributed throughout the municipal territory.

The 2026 Theme: 'Mobility for everyone'

For the 2026 edition, the European Commission confirms the slogan 'Mobility for everyone', focusing this year on intergenerational equity: ensuring the right to move for everyone, regardless of age, gender, economic status, or ability, leaving no one behind, including future generations. A principle that in Rome translates into events designed for children, young people, adults, and the elderly, with particular attention to accessibility and road safety.

City-wide events in the Districts

The strength of the Roman event lies in its reach: meetings, conferences, workshops, and outdoor initiatives enliven the city's various Districts (Municipi). The typical program includes:

• urban walks and walking itineraries to discover the neighborhoods;
• eco-friendly vehicle trials, showrooms, and low-emission vehicle demonstrations;
• bike-to-work initiatives to encourage commuting by bicycle;
• conferences and seminars on cycling, walking, and road safety;
• educational projects dedicated to schools.

Car-Free Day

The highlight of the week is the World Car-Free Day on September 22, when one or more areas of the city are reserved for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport. It is an opportunity to rediscover urban space freed from traffic and to experience a more livable and quieter city.

A laboratory for the Rome of tomorrow

In recent editions, the European Mobility Week has served as a framework for structural interventions on the Capital's soft mobility, from the testing of new pedestrian areas in the Historic Center to the expansion of public transport services. More than just a simple series of events, the week is for the Municipality of Rome and the entire Lazio region a moment of dialogue between institutions, associations, and citizens on the future of urban travel, in line with European decarbonization and air quality goals.
