The taranta and folk music of Southern Italy light up Piazza Mario Pagano
Few names tell the story of Southern Italian popular music like that of Eugenio Bennato, considered one of the great masters of Italian folk. His concert in Potenza, hosted in the very central Piazza Mario Pagano, brought the power of taranta and Neapolitan folk to the heart of the Lucanian capital, in a free evening that concluded the holiday events with music.
Founder of the Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare in the seventies and creator of Taranta Power in the nineties, Eugenio Bennato has brought the ethnic music of Southern Italy to the international world music markets. His repertoire, which intertwines popular roots with contemporary themes and impactful songs, made the square vibrate with Mediterranean rhythms and traditional chants.
Organized by the Municipality of Potenza, the concert was conceived as a gift to the city during the holiday season, with free admission. Along with other events in the winter program, it helped to liven up the historic center and attract citizens and visitors to the square, confirming music's role as a community unifier in the capital of Basilicata.
