The book festival in the shadow of Mount Etna, in Catania
Etnabook – International Book and Culture Festival is one of the most vibrant literary events in Eastern Sicily. Established in 2019, it transforms Catania into a grand open-air library every year. For five days, the city and several surrounding municipalities are filled with book presentations, author meetings, debates, workshops, and award ceremonies. The heart of the festival is the Palazzo della Cultura in the city's historic center, though events spread throughout the entire Etna region.
Etnabook has made territorial diffusion one of its hallmarks. Beyond the Palazzo della Cultura in Catania, recent editions have involved towns such as Gravina di Catania, Pedara, Sant'Agata Li Battiati, and Paternò, with a calendar that brings books and writers directly to the public, outside traditional venues. This widespread approach makes the festival a true community event for the entire Catania metropolitan area, in the heart of Sicily.
The soul of the festival is the "Etnabook – Culture under the Volcano" Literary Prize, divided into three categories: poetry, fiction/non-fiction, and "A book in a page". Every year, the competition receives hundreds of entries from across Italy, with award ceremonies serving as some of the most anticipated moments of the program.
Etnabook takes place every year in September and is distinguished by free admission to all meetings, a choice that makes it a truly popular event open to everyone. Promoted by the No_Name Cultural Association, with the support of the Municipality of Catania, the festival is now a reference point for the cultural landscape of the Province of Catania and all of Sicily.
The eighth edition of Etnabook is scheduled in Catania from September 23 to 27, 2026, with the theme "Collega•menti": a reflection on the value of connections and bonds between individuals and communities in the face of present-day challenges.
Among the first names announced is Barbara Bellomo, defined as a "historic friend of the festival," with her novel L'incartatrice di arance (Garzanti), set in 1906 Catania. Confirmed events also include a meeting with Nunzia Scalzo, author of La regola dell'ortica.
The festival, promoted by the No_Name Cultural Association, takes place between the Palazzo della Cultura in Catania and various Etnean municipalities, with free admission to meetings. The full program is published on the etnabook.it website in the weeks leading up to the event.
The main venue is the Palazzo della Cultura, at Via Vittorio Emanuele II 121, in the historic center of Catania. By plane: Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, just a few kilometers from the center. By train: Catania Centrale Station. By car: A18 motorway (Messina-Catania) or A19 (Palermo-Catania). Several events also take place in other Etnean municipalities (Gravina di Catania, Pedara, Sant'Agata Li Battiati, Paternò).
Admission to all festival meetings and events is free. Some EtnaBook Lab workshop activities may require a registration fee. For the updated program and registration for the Literary Prize, please consult the official website etnabook.it.
