A nature run through the Pantani di Accumoli, in the heart of the Laga Mountains
The Epicentro Trail is a trail running event held in Accumoli, a mountain village in the province of Rieti, located in the far north of Lazio near the borders of Umbria, Marche, and Abruzzo. The event was born from an idea by the Radici Accumolesi in Marcia ASD APS association and invites athletes and walkers to discover one of the most authentic corners of the central Apennines, within the Laga Mountains and the Gran Sasso and Laga Mountains National Park.
The event offers three options suitable for different levels of fitness:
The tracks cross the Pantani di Accumoli area, a Special Area of Conservation of great environmental value, and skirt Lake Secco, an oasis protected by WWF Italy: a high-altitude ecosystem made of grasslands, peat bogs, and panoramic views stretching across the Laga chain.
Epicentro Trail is not just a race: it is a way to bring people and attention back to a territory hit hard by the 2016 earthquake, of which Accumoli was one of the epicenters. Running and walking in these places becomes a gesture of solidarity, community reconstruction, and promotion of local natural, cultural, and gastronomic heritage. The 2026 edition, the fifth in the series, coincides with the tenth anniversary of the earthquake and thus takes on a particularly profound meaning of remembrance and rebirth.
The event is organized under the aegis of OPES โ Rieti Provincial Committee and fosters ties with neighboring Apennine communities: the 2026 edition was held in partnership with the Stracittadina Cittร dell'Aquila, testifying to a shared path between Accumoli and L'Aquila. Registrations and information are managed by the organizing association via the website accumoliinmarcia.it. The races are accompanied by moments of conviviality, refreshments featuring local products, and cultural initiatives that showcase the architectural and landscape beauties of the town.
The fifth edition of the Epicentro Trail was held on Sunday, May 31, 2026, in Accumoli, in the heart of the Laga Mountains. An event made even more significant by the tenth anniversary of the 2016 earthquake, experienced by the community as a moment of memory and rebirth.
The proven formula was confirmed: 22 km competitive trail, 10 km competitive trail, and 6 km non-competitive walk open to all. The routes crossed the Pantani di Accumoli area (Special Area of Conservation) and Lake Secco, a WWF oasis, offering participants a total immersion in the nature of the central Apennines.
The 2026 edition was held in partnership with the Stracittadina Cittร dell'Aquila on May 24, sealing the bond between Accumoli and L'Aquila.
Registration and meeting point managed by the Radici Accumolesi in Marcia association via the accumoliinmarcia.it website.
Accumoli can be reached by car along the SS4 Salaria road, which connects Rieti to Ascoli Piceno; the village is about an hour and a half from Rome and slightly more from L'Aquila. The reference railway station is Rieti, from where you can continue by car or bus.
Registration for the competitive races and the non-competitive walk is handled through the organizing association's website accumoliinmarcia.it. It is recommended to check fees, departure times, and bib collection procedures in advance, as these are announced by the organizers each year.
As these are mountain routes, trail running shoes, layered clothing, and a water supply are recommended. The late spring period offers ideal days for high-altitude running, with cool temperatures and landscapes in full bloom.
