A day of sustainability, community, and commitment to the Valle del Sacco
The Environment Festival in Pofi began as a small civic initiative and has quickly become one of the most popular events in the summer calendar of the Municipality of Pofi, in the province of Frosinone, Lazio. The idea behind it is simple yet profound: to make ecology not just a topic for conferences, but a collective experience rooted in concrete actions, hands in the soil, and shared conversations in the town square.
The setting is the Valle del Sacco, a region that has been dealing with environmental restoration for decades and has, as a result, developed a unique sensitivity. In fact, in 2025, Pofi was recognized as a Plastic Free Municipality in the province of Frosinone—an award earned through consistent efforts in clean-up drives, eco-walks, and environmental education in schools.
The event is concentrated into a single, action-packed day. The afternoon kicks off with a local food and craft market, where regional producers showcase traditional goods, alongside tree planting in areas designated by the local administration: a symbolic yet tangible gesture that leaves a lasting mark long after the festival lights go out.
As evening approaches, the space fills with children and families. Educational workshops, led by local associations, teach reuse, waste sorting, and respect for nature through play. An information point on waste sorting remains active throughout the event, with staff available to explain how to reduce environmental impact at home.
The evening program blends two spirits. On one hand, traditional entertainment with performances by the Folklore Pofano group and songs from the Centro Diurno Colle Ameno choir, which are highlights for the local community. On the other, intellectual engagement: meetings and round tables dedicated to the monitoring, remediation, and ecological transition of the Valle del Sacco, featuring local administrators, Plastic Free representatives, associations like Tua, and cultural guests.
What sets the Environment Festival apart from many other summer events is that it goes beyond mere entertainment. The theme of feli-città (happy cities), central to the most recent edition, perfectly captures the initiative's spirit: quality of life, collective well-being, and respect for the environment as parts of a single conversation. It is a way of saying that protecting the land is not a sacrifice, but a form of shared happiness.
Pofi is a village of just over four thousand inhabitants overlooking the valley, a short distance from Frosinone and easily accessible from Rome. Visitors to the festival will find a welcoming town where the event takes place in the streets and squares, with no barriers or tickets. It is the perfect opportunity to combine a trip to the Ciociaria region—among olive groves, ancient villages, and fine Lazio cuisine—with an open-air evening where the local community shows its most authentic and committed side.
For 2026, the Environment Festival changed scenery, moving from the park to the heart of the town: Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in Pofi hosted the fourth edition of the event on Sunday, June 21, 2026, officially starting at 6:00 PM.
The main theme was feli-città, proposed by philosopher and writer Filippo Cannizzo, who was present for the presentation of his book Scampoli di felicità. Alongside him, Deputy Mayor Marco Savarese, Environmental Delegate Amedeo Berardi, municipal Plastic Free representative Aurora Ricci, and the president of the Tua association, Roberta Beccacci, took the floor.
The evening continued with educational workshops for children, a performance by the Folklore Pofano group, songs by the Centro Diurno Colle Ameno choir, and an exhibition of work by students from the Roberto Scurpa school. To close, the discussion Focus on the Valle del Sacco: monitoring, remediation, and ecological transition and the screening of the documentary Le mani nel Sacco by Alessio Marzilli.
By car: A1 Rome-Naples motorway, exit at Ceprano or Frosinone, then follow the SS Casilina and provincial roads to Pofi. The journey from Rome takes about an hour and a half.
By train: Ceccano or Frosinone train station on the Rome-Cassino line, then continue by bus or taxi to Pofi.
Free admission to all activities. The festival takes place in the late afternoon and evening, generally starting from 6:00 PM.
Bring a reusable water bottle: the event is low-impact and single-use plastic is discouraged. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the morning eco-walks, when scheduled.
