The Emigrant's Festival is one of the most heartfelt events of the summer in Casalvieri, a town in the Valle di Comino in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Lazio region's Ciociaria. Every year, in the height of August, the town gathers around its emigrants: men and women who, throughout the 20th century, left these hills to seek work and fortune abroad, and who return during the summer season to reconnect with their homes, relatives, and lifelong friends.

The evening is not just a festive celebration, but a moment of collective memory: an opportunity to remember those who left, to share the stories of those who succeeded far from home, and to strengthen the bond between the resident community and its diaspora scattered across Europe, the Americas, and Australia.

Purgatorio, the heart of the celebration

The event takes place in the Purgatorio district, one of the localities that make up the territory of Casalvieri alongside the historic center and the villages of Roselli, Sorelle, Checle, and San Pietro. Here, on a warm August evening, the square comes alive with music, conversation, and conviviality: returning emigrants rediscover familiar faces, while younger generations discover their family roots.

Part of the Estate Casalvierana program

The Emigrant's Festival is one of over twenty events in the Estate Casalvierana, the rich program that the Municipality of Casalvieri promotes from July to the end of August with the support of the Lazio Region and the Mountain Community. Food festivals, sports tournaments, religious feasts, musical evenings, and cultural moments follow one another in the historic center and the districts, creating a dense and well-attended village summer.

Within this calendar, the evening dedicated to emigrants holds a special place: it is the moment when the entire community, enriched by the return of its distant children, recognizes itself in a shared history.

The roots of Ciociaria emigration

Ciociaria and the Valle di Comino have long been lands of significant emigration.
