The Abruzzese dialect poetry contest in Celenza sul Trigno

The "Elio De Aloysio" Regional Dialect Poetry Competition is one of the most long-standing and cherished cultural events in Celenza sul Trigno, a village in the upper Vastese area of Chieti province, in the heart of southern Abruzzo. Conceived in 1972 by Elio De Aloysio, then president of the "Pro Coelentia" tourist association, the competition has grown into a key reference point for dialect poets across the entire region and beyond.
The competition is dedicated to poetry in the Abruzzese dialect: each edition brings together poets who compete by reciting their original works before a jury and an audience gathered in the municipal theater. The event is not merely a literary contest, but an opportunity to preserve and pass on the language and folk traditions of the area—an intangible heritage that might otherwise be lost. Over the years, the jury has been coordinated by art and literary critic Massimo Pasqualone, who presides over its proceedings.
The ceremony traditionally takes place at the Municipal Theater of Celenza sul Trigno, where invited poets read their lyrics in dialect. Alongside the verses, folk music takes center stage, with accompaniment from local folklore choirs such as the "Cantori della Torre" from Vasto. At the end of the evening, the jury announces the winners and presents the awards in a festive atmosphere that involves the entire community.
Organized by the Pro Loco Coelentia with the patronage of the municipal administration, the competition is now deeply rooted in the life of the village. For Celenza sul Trigno, it serves as a vehicle for promoting local history, art, and landscape, as well as a gathering point that attracts poets and enthusiasts from throughout the Trigno area and Abruzzo.
The competition is usually held during the summer, between August and September. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check for updates with the Pro Loco Coelentia and the Municipality of Celenza sul Trigno closer to the event.
