About Eggplant Festival

Every summer, the village of Santa Marina in Milazzo celebrates one of Sicily's most beloved crops with the Eggplant Festival. Held in Piazza Pozzo since 1988, this event is a true feast of flavor and tradition. Featuring eggplant-based tastings, the 'La Melanzana d'Oro' competition for local farmers, and performances from the National Folklore Festival, the event brings August evenings to life with live music, dancing, and an authentic local atmosphere in the heart of the province of Messina.

A rural celebration in the heart of Milazzo

The Eggplant Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in the village of Santa Marina, located on the plains of Milazzo in the province of Messina. Organized since 1988 by the Associazione Folklorica Città di Milazzo, the event traditionally takes place in Piazza Pozzo in August, serving as a heartfelt tribute to one of the iconic vegetables of Sicilian cuisine.

The star of the show: the eggplant

For two evenings, the square transforms into a large, convivial space where visitors can enjoy traditional local dishes: pasta with eggplant sauce, sandwiches with grilled or oil-preserved eggplant, and numerous other specialties that highlight this local produce. The tastings are the heart of the festival, drawing residents and visitors from neighboring towns every year.

The 'La Melanzana d'Oro' and the Folklore Festival

At the core of the festival's identity is the La Melanzana d'Oro (Golden Eggplant) competition, reserved for local farmers, which rewards the best specimens and highlights the deep bond between the community and its agriculture. Alongside the gastronomy, the National Folklore Festival takes place, featuring parades and performances by folk groups that bring the village streets to life. Over the years, the event has hosted both Italian and international groups, accompanied by bands, songs, and traditional dances.

Atmosphere and tradition

The Eggplant Festival is about more than just food: live music, square dancing, craft markets, and entertainment create a vibrant popular atmosphere that renews the sense of community in Santa Marina every summer. The event is one of the many expressions of Sicily's rich festival tradition and helps keep the rural roots of the Mamertine territory alive.

A historic appointment

With over thirty years of history, the festival is now a classic of the Milazzo summer. Born as a small village celebration, it has grown into an event that attracts visitors from the entire Tyrrhenian area of the province of Messina, successfully blending the pleasure of good food with the promotion of the popular traditions of the Municipality of Milazzo.
