About Egg Palio

In Tredozio, a small village in the Forlì Apennines, the Egg Festival and Palio takes place every Easter and Easter Monday, one of Romagna's most beloved folk festivals. Since 1964, the four districts of the town — Borgo, Nuovo, Piazza, and Casone — have competed in traditional games with the egg as the absolute protagonist: from the National Hard-Boiled Egg Eating Championship to the maxi-beating, up to the Palio contest in the Tramazzo riverbed. Two days of Romagna gastronomy, allegorical parades, music, and fireworks that liven up this corner of Emilia-Romagna.

The egg festival in the heart of the Romagna Apennines

Every year, during the Easter and Easter Monday holidays, the village of Tredozio, in the Province of Forlì-Cesena (Emilia-Romagna), transforms into the stage for one of the most original and long-standing popular events in Romagna: the Egg Festival and Palio. A tradition that dates back to 1964 and which, edition after edition, has managed to preserve its genuine and jovial spirit, becoming an unmissable event for residents and for the many visitors who come to the Tramazzo valley.

The four rival districts

The beating heart of the festival is the friendly rivalry between the four districts into which the town is divided: Borgo, Nuovo, Piazza, and Casone. Each district prepares its team, sets up floats for the allegorical parade, and gets ready to compete for the Palio through a series of challenges, all with one common denominator: the egg. The atmosphere of healthy competition, filled with colors, flags, and cheers, involves the entire community and offers an authentic spectacle, far from the tourist-driven logic of large events.

Games and traditions revolving around the egg

The program brings together historical and curious competitions that have developed over the decades:

  • National Hard-Boiled Egg Eating Championship, the most famous event, where competitors race to devour the most eggs in a few minutes;
  • Sfogline Championship, dedicated to the Romagna art of hand-pulled pasta dough;
  • Maxi Egg Beating, an egg-cracking challenge open to the public;
  • Palio Contest between the districts, with egg battles, egg in the haystack, tug-of-war, and egg toss, held in the evocative bed of the Tramazzo river.

Special mention goes to the historic Egg Challenge with the Marche town of Arcevia (Ancona), a jovial twinning that has been renewed for over forty years.

Flavors of Romagna

The festival is also a grand gastronomic celebration: stands and food trucks offer the great classics of Romagna cuisine, from piadina to bartolaccio (a typical savory pastry from the valley), including polenta and the inevitable tagliatelle al ragù. On the eve of the festival, the four districts prepare the traditional propitiatory dinner in the square, a convivial moment that officially inaugurates the celebrations.

A community that endures

In recent years, Tredozio and its valley have been severely affected by the 2023 flood and seismic events: the Egg Festival and Palio has also become a symbol of resilience and rebirth, an opportunity for the community to come together and support the reconstruction of the area. Organized by the Pro Loco Tredozio, the event remains a living example of how popular tradition can unite a town.

Egg Palio — edition 2026

The 60th edition of the Egg Festival and Palio took place in Tredozio on Sunday, April 5th and Monday, April 6th, 2026, during Easter and Easter Monday. An important milestone for a tradition born in 1964, celebrated with a large photographic exhibition on the history of the event and with the traditional propitiatory dinner of the four districts on the eve. Two days of egg games, Romagna gastronomy, and community celebration.

The 60th edition of the Egg Festival and Palio celebrated six decades of history with a program full of events, enhanced by a large photographic exhibition dedicated to the memory of the event and by the traditional propitiatory dinner of the four districts set up in the square on the eve. The festival also confirmed its solidarity value, supporting the reconstruction of the territory after the flood and seismic events of previous years.
