The time-trial climb from Lana to Gampenpass, a stage of the Südtirol Berg Cup
The Edelrot Trophy is one of the most highly regarded uphill cycling races in South Tyrol. Every year in early May, the town of Lana, nestled among the apple orchards of the Adige Valley in the province of Bolzano, becomes the starting point for a vertical challenge toward the Gampenpass (Passo Palade), a mountain pass at 1,518 meters that connects the Merano basin to the Val di Non in Trentino.
The race is organized by the amateur cycling association RV Edelrot Lana (Amateurradsportverein Edelrot Lana) and has long been a staple of the South Tyrolean time-trial calendar.
The route is as simple in design as it is demanding on the legs: it starts in Oberlana (Upper Lana), at an altitude of about 314 meters, and climbs relentlessly to the Gampenpass. In total, it covers 17.7 kilometers with a 1,204-meter elevation gain, winding along a scenic road that cuts through valley orchards before climbing into the woods toward the pass.
The Edelrot Trophy is part of the Südtirol Berg Cup, a series of time-trials reserved for amateur mountain specialists held on the most beautiful alpine passes in South Tyrol. The Lana race traditionally serves as the second event of the season, positioned between the MendelRace and the final challenge on the Stelvio Pass.
The competition is open to FCI-registered amateurs and athletes from affiliated sports organizations. It regularly attracts over a hundred participants, with a strong contingent of Austrian and German riders drawn by the intensity of the ascent.
Bib numbers are distributed in the morning at the Arbeiterverein in Lana, with the race starting in the early afternoon. By the end of the race, the top times serve as benchmarks; in recent years, the men's record has dropped to around 45–46 minutes. The day concludes with the awards ceremony and the traditional pasta party, a social gathering that brings together athletes, families, and cycling enthusiasts.
For spectators, the Edelrot Trophy is also an opportunity to discover one of the most picturesque corners of Trentino-South Tyrol: from the blooming apple orchards of Lana to the panoramic views of the Gampenpass, the climb offers vistas that perfectly blend sport with the natural beauty of the South Tyrolean landscape.
The tenth edition of the Edelrot Trophy was held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, as the second stage of the Südtirol Berg Cup. On the 17.7 km course from Lana to the Gampenpass, the German rider Quirin Haidl (Radteam IMPULS) set the best men's time, finishing ahead of Philipp Götsch and Roberto Bonapace. In the women's category, victory went to the German athlete Julia Jedelhauser (Team LeXXi Racing), followed by Julia Sörgel and Julia Tanner.
The race confirmed its international appeal, with a large group of starters from South Tyrol, Austria, and Germany, and concluded with the afternoon awards ceremony and pasta party in Lana.
