About Ecotrail Herentas

Ecotrail Herentas is the summer trail running race that brings the small village of Tufillo to life. Perched in the Alto Vastese region overlooking the Trigno Valley in the province of Chieti, the event was created to unite sport, nature, and history. Named after the goddess Herentas, worshipped by the Frentani people in pre-Roman times, the trail leads athletes and walkers along scenic paths through over three thousand years of history. The competitive race is accompanied by a fun run open to everyone, youth categories, and the traditional pasta party hosted by the Pro Loco.

A trail run between nature and Frentani history

The Ecotrail Herentas is a trail running race held in Tufillo, a village of just over two hundred souls nestled in the Alto Vastese area, within the province of Chieti in the Abruzzo region. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Tufillo with the technical support of Atletica Velo Club San Salvo and Podistica San Salvo, and is part of the regional Corrilabruzzo circuit. The event is sponsored by the Municipality of Tufillo and US Acli.

The name and the goddess Herentas

The trail takes its name from Herentas, an ancient Italic deity of fertility and love worshipped by the Frentani, the people who inhabited this territory in pre-Roman times. This reference is no coincidence: the famous Key of Herentas was discovered in Tufillo, a two-thousand-year-old artifact bearing an inscription in the Oscan language, a precious testament to the village's ancient roots. Running the Ecotrail Herentas means traversing over three thousand years of history, amidst rolling hills, dirt paths, and glimpses of the Trigno Valley.

The route

The competitive race covers a course of approximately 9.9 kilometers, alternating between paved roads and dirt trails immersed in nature, with climbs and descents that challenge both runners and trail enthusiasts. Alongside the competitive race, there is a fun walk open to everyone, designed for those who want to enjoy the experience without the pressure of competition, as well as youth races for the little ones.

Sport, culture, and territory

Ecotrail Herentas was born with the goal of combining sport, culture, and local promotion, bringing athletes, enthusiasts, and visitors to discover one of the most characteristic villages of the Alto Vastese and the landscapes of the Trigno Valley. Winners of past editions have been awarded handcrafted silver medals replicating the ancient Key of Herentas, highlighting the deep bond between the race and the historical identity of Tufillo.

The post-race celebration

The day concludes with the traditional pasta party offered by the Pro Loco of Tufillo to all participants and their companions, a convivial moment that turns the sporting event into a true community celebration, featuring typical Abruzzese flavors and the warm hospitality of the village.
