South Tyrolean Easter traditions in Piazza Walther, in the heart of Bolzano
In the heart of Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol and seat of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, spring brings one of the city's most beloved events: the Easter Market (known in German as Ostermarkt). Every year, between Maundy Thursday and Easter Monday, the central Piazza Walther transforms into a village of wooden huts, decorated with fresh ivy and yellow and pink flowers, giving Bolzano's main square a festive and colorful atmosphere.
The market hosts around twenty exhibitors offering the best of the region: South Tyrolean gastronomic delicacies, genuine products from mountain farms, wooden objects, jewelry, bread, flowers, and Easter decorations. Every day, visitors can meet South Tyrolean farmers, the true guardians of local traditions, and discover artistic crafts typical of the Easter season.
The Easter Market is not just a place for shopping, but an experience designed especially for families with children. The entertainment program offers creative workshops where little ones learn to make decorations with natural materials, the traditional hard-boiled egg game Eierpecken (also called Koggele pecken), Easter egg hunts, as well as the unmissable nostalgic carousel and the little train. Accompanying the days is a musical program with live concerts, ranging from Alpine folk groups to classical music ensembles.
The Easter Market is part of the broader spring festival "Spring in the City", which enlivens Bolzano for several weeks. During the same period, other events take place in Piazza Walther, including the Bolzano in Fiore Arte exhibition and the historic Flower Festival, which transforms the square into an immense botanical garden animated by local florists at the end of April. Together, these events celebrate the arrival of the warm season in one of the most charming cities in the Alps.
Strolling among the stalls of the Bolzano Easter Market means immersing yourself in the bilingual culture and traditions of South Tyrol, in a cozy and welcoming urban setting. It is an ideal opportunity to savor local products, breathe in the South Tyrolean Easter atmosphere, and enjoy a few carefree hours with the family, just a stone's throw from the Cathedral and the historic arcades of Bolzano.
In 2026, the Bolzano Easter Market enlivened Piazza Walther from April 2 to 6, five days from Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday. The wooden stalls hosted around twenty exhibitors with South Tyrolean gastronomic specialties, farm products, artistic crafts, flowers, and Easter decorations.
The family program featured creative workshops with natural materials, the traditional Eierpecken, Easter egg hunts, a carousel, and a little train for the little ones, as well as live concerts. The event was part of the "Spring in the City" spring festival, which concluded at the end of the month with the Flower Festival.
Piazza Walther is located in the historic center of Bolzano, a few minutes' walk from the train station. By train, Bolzano is served by the Brenner line (connections from Verona, Trento, Innsbruck). By car, take the Bolzano South or Bolzano North motorway exit (A22 Brenner motorway), with parking available in the center.
The Easter Market takes place from Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday. Admission is free. A day trip is recommended, with the possibility of combining it with a visit to the historic center and the arcades.
